Network Printing - Complete noob

Well I’m the ultimate beginner on this topic so I’d probably be making a few stupid comments every few sentences.

Basically in windows, I connect to a computer from which I can connect to a Printer (I don’t think I have a direct connection to the printer). In windows I click on run, type \office, which takes me to a new window which displays the name of the printer (Canon etc) and finally double clicking it (and installing the driver when windows asks me) allows me to connect to the printer.

Would anyone have any guides, links or suggestions on how to do this on opensuse 11.2, kde4.4?

Thanks for your help.

There are people over here that can help you with this, but you need to be more specific. Many of us do not run windu systems at all, so we need to know what exactly you want to achieve. For example: I have one PC with 11.2, on PC with Vista with a Canon Pixma MP510 attached to it, how do I print to the Canon from 11.2 ?

Thanks for your reply. So our office computers are all connected together (LAN). One of these computers is connected to the printer (canon). In order to access this printer in windows I have to connect to the address \office using the run command in windoze (I dual boot opensuse 11.2 and windoze xp) from which I can then access the printer. (Since the printer is only connected to that one computer).

I’d like to be able to connect to that printer via the “\office” computer in opensuse. I’m not too savvy on network connections so please let me know if you need any more information.

Thanks for your help.

Here’s a tutorial about printing to a windows computer from a Linux computer using Either Samba’s SMB/CIFS Protocol or LPD Printing (two different options).

Printer Sharing: Windows Print Server for Suse/openSUSE Linux Clients [Samba and LPD]

In your case, probably better to stick to the Samba SMB/CIFS protocol.

Swerdna’s post will help you out. It’s a masterpiece of a how to guide that helped me out a lot in networking my openSUSE and Windoze machines together. Thanks a million Swerdna!

Wow, that was an excellent guide swerdna. Got my downstairs printer working on the first time though your guide.

Thank you very much.
