Hi,
You may have changed the network management option in Yast to ‘traditional’ (ifup), in which case you would have to change it back to using network manager.
Regards,
Barry.
I got this error even after switching back to NetworkManager. Following command did the trick:
rm /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state
Similar problem:
Network management disabled after start on 11.2 - openSUSE Forums
I had this same problem on a fresh install of OpenSuSE 11.3 on a ThinkPad T23. The wired network worked fine as installed. I could set up and connect wireless with Yast, but changing to “User Controlled with NetworkManager” gave the “Network Management Disabled” message.
Running “rm /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state” fixed it.
Is this a permanent fix, or will the problem keep returning and need to be fixed repeatedly?
Thanks,
Howard
I just did a fresh install of 11.3 on my Thinkpad X61 and had connection. After a crash, it states that the network is Unmanaged and “Network Management Disabled.” I tried the above command but to no avail.
Anyone have a clue as to the next step?

I think you might try switching the enable/disable wireless hardware button on your laptop.
Other than that you should look here http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-help-here/wireless/449893-request-comment-creating-initial-wireless-connection.html
I have the same problem after installing OpenSuse 11.3 on my Thinkpad T61.
I noticed that if I opened YaST->Network Devices->Network Settings and switched from NetworkManager to ifup and then back to NetworkManager, I could usually start working with Network Manager.
Since YaST is stopping/starting the services, I thought I’d try doing that. The command is:
This seems to work also and running it from the command prompt is much quicker than starting YaST and changing the network setting. One thing to note is that Network Services seems to crash both ways, when it is restarted, it begins working normally.
Try it and see if it works for your Thinkpad.
