Network is not working

Good day everybody,
I’m new to Linux and to SuSE.
I installed SuSE 11.1 with KDE and tried to my best to connect to Wireless network with no luck. Searched the forums and google however the Network Manager was not even showing on the desktop.

Then, I re-intalled with the gnome desktop. Now I find the Network Manager, however still I can not get connected. All what I have is Network Name and Key, however the network manager askes about 40/128 bit key which I don’t know where to get it. The network is myown and I connect to it in Windows with no problems.

I tried also to connect to wired LAN, however also it works for a while aquiring IP then disconnects!

I need help with the ABCs as I’m new apprecating your help.

Regards.

Getting Your Wireless to Work - openSUSE Forums

The key it is asking for is the wireless encryption key. You will need to know if you are using this, the settings are in your router. When you select to create a new wlan0 connection, you should see your ESSID and by default it is offering you WEP encryption because it identifies it as such. If you don’t know what the WEP key is (is this because it’s some crappy ISP provided router setup with a install cd)?

Hi,

Let’s start with that problem and after that we can configure your WLAN-Router to a better encryption and make you WLAN run.

Some more informations are needed. So please log in a console as root and type:

lspci

There should be a line like this:

02:05.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)

If there is not a line starting with ethernet controller just stop and and paste the whole result here. If you find the controller go on without pasting the result.

At the beginning of the line you can see a number. Type:

lspci -vs 02:05.0

Replace the 02:05.0 with the number shown on your system and paste the result here.

Also as root type:

dmesg -c

Don’t paste the result. Plug the cable and after some seconds type:

dmesg
lsmod | sort
ifconfig -a

Paste the results of the commands here.

Bye

Erik

Good day everyone,
and really thank you for your cooperation and quick response.

Regarding the Wireless router here is the info I got:

> SSID (Network name),
> Network Authentication (WPA-PSK),
> Encryption (AES),
> and Passphrase/key

I used the above directly with Windows XP and Vista and the connection was smooth and successfull.

In SuSE, when I defice the wireless network I get the following questions:

> Network name (ESSID) should be the same as above,
> Wireless Security (instead of Network Authentication),
> Encryption (looks like above),
> Passphrase - same,

then I get another screen asking for new things:

> Wireless security, and this is different from the above. in the drop-down list I get things like this:

  • WEB 40/128 bit key
  • WEB 128 bit passphrase

> Authentication : Open System / Shared key

and regarless what I try in the new screen nothing proceed successfully!

Let me guess, you are dual booting Linux/Windows?

Realtek 8139/8168/8169 on 2.6.21.3 or newer - LinuxQuestions.org

Perfect guess, yes I have a dual bootable netbook, Win XP and SuSE 11.1

Hi,

thanx for the output. The solution for your wired adapter you got. Just try what the link Akoellh sent you says.

For your wireless adapter you should try the madwifi module and not the ath5k. Just go here:
How to make stubborn atheros ar242 (5211) work - solution - openSUSE Forums
and scroll down a bit to find how to do this.

Bye

Erik

Hi again,

the link I gave you has an error:

echo "blacklist ath5k" > /etc/modprobe.d/ath5k

should be

echo "blacklist ath5k" >> /etc/modprobe.d/ath5k

Bye

Erik

Dear Akoellh,

I checked the settings of the Network card and it is already Enabled.

Dear Erikro,

I implemented the two steps as per the link but unlikely nothing changed. I tried with the Network Manager and without it, same results.

What is your suggestions to move forward?

Regards.
