Just upgraded to opensuse12.1 from a positively neolithic 11.1 and have discovered that I have lost my internet connection through the network. Does anyone have a check list so I can track down the problem?

If you are using Yast, use it again to configure the network entirely.
Have you done what I explain here, after the upgrade?

If you don’t, you will have all sort of problems.

This will have to wait till I get my internet connection back

Use the same internet connection you are using to post here…

So? Windows will not crash if you read an openSUSE web page.

No but it prevents me from doing the stuff on the page!
Anyway just to note that I have discovered that if I enter an IP number in the browser URL bar then I get a connection to whatever site it belongs to - entering the name just doesn’t work.
Actually I’m surprised that isn’t programmed into Windows

Ahh, the critical piece of information. Your DNS is not set up correctly.
Sometimes this can happen because file /etc/resolv.conf has been corrupted. As
the system is supposed to leave it alone if the user has modified it, you are
stuck with the bad one unless you delete it. The most likely fix is to open a
terminal and enter the following command:
sudo rm /etc/resolv.conf
After you restart the network or reboot, your networking should be OK. If the
above does not fix the problem, then run the following command:
kdesu kwrite /etc/resolv.conf
In the editor that pops up, enter two lines that say “nameserver 8.8.8.8” and
“nameserver 8.8.4.4”, and delete any existing nameserver lines.

Then you have to configure a domain name server.

Thanks for the help but as one troll on this forum thinks I’m “Wasting everyone’s time by taking way too long to answer all the help for my stupid newbie questions” I’ve decided to give up as (being a third of the way through my chemo) I would rather concentrate on throwing up all the time rather than setting a little aside to gather my wits and try and fix my computer.
Again thanks for the help - particularly Carlos.

too bad you quit…setting up dns is a lot easier than it sounds!!
good luck with your health issue…when that is solved you will have
more patience also (also in that i don’t know who is the troll you
mention but s/he may be half way through the fifth run or chemo…so!!)…
anyway, it takes a lot of patience to make it here…if you don’t have
it you don’t have it, and i’d recommend a nice easy Apple/Mac or iPad…
