Network interface (wired) detected by Yast but not connected, Tumbleweed

Hi there!
I have ran into a strange problem after months of a working wired internet connection.
Suddenly the network interface (wired) is not working anymore. It is detected by Yast but Yast tells that it is not connected. The machine is dualboot with windows and here the wired connection works, so it is not a cable issue.

I have tried these check commands from another thread:

/usr/sbin/hwinfo --network

I just wonder why it is not working. Setup method is wicked.

Hope for suggestions :wink: Regards

I note that your hwinfo output shows that the ethernet link is not active, so that would need to be addressed first…

Once you have a confirmed active link (use ethtool to verify if necessary), try the following

sudo ifup enp2s0f5
/sbin/ifconfig

You might also share your /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-enp2s0f5 config here for others to advise further.

A bit more research and I’ve located a couple of bug reports describing the same symptoms (link down) that you describe
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/880316
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1310798
This is a jme (JMicron) driver issue (apparently affecting version 1.0.8), and some users have found that manually setting the speed to 100MbaseT full duplex seems to help eg

sudo /usr/sbin/ethtool -s enp2s0f5 speed 100 duplex full

Thanks for helping and exploring. Funny thing is that eth0 worked fine for a very long time without issues. And the bug reoprts seems fairly old. Right now I am using wireless.

Anyway - content of /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-enp2s0f5 config:

BOOTPROTO=‘dhcp’
BROADCAST=‘’
DHCLIENT_SET_DEFAULT_ROUTE=‘yes’
ETHTOOL_OPTIONS=‘’
IPADDR=‘’
MTU=‘’
NAME=‘JMC250 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller’
NETMASK=‘’
NETWORK=‘’
REMOTE_IPADDR=‘’
STARTMODE=‘auto’

Both network interfaces reports

active=unknown

but I know for sure that wlan is active, so I do not trust hwinfo.

I tried

sudo /usr/sbin/ethtool -s enp2s0f5 speed 100 duplex full

and for a few moments the eth0 was connected according to Yast, but it then was falling back to the “not connected” state.

Strange days…

The relevant factor may be the driver version

modinfo jme

Both network interfaces reports

 Code:
 active=unknown

but I know for sure that wlan is active, so I do not trust hwinfo.

No, it’s the ‘link detected’ status you’re looking for.

I tried

sudo /usr/sbin/ethtool -s enp2s0f5 speed 100 duplex full

You’d need to examine the kernel output for messages relating to the network interface. It is definitely an issue with the jme driver though. I’d suggest submitting an openSUSE bug report.
