I’m trying to perform a Network Installation of 11.0. But my modem is PPP, so there’s no DHCP server. Hence, the boot iso goes directly to the text screen when no DHCP server is found.
I’ve tried various IP addresses and subnet masks according to the output of ipconfig in Windows; I assume I’m doing this part right. But I get stuck on the HTTP source: It asks for an IP address, but I have none so I just enter the domain name --ftp.uni-ulm.de/pub/mirrors/opensuse…
I’ve tried it many different ways, but it just tells me I have an invalid HTTP source. Can someone please tell me what I’m doing wrong with this?
Maybe I should have titled this “Internet Installation using PPP.” I originally clicked the “Network” option on the Get It page here on this website, so I assumed it was a network installation. But I see now that network can imply installing from either the Internet or a local directory.
In any case, I’m trying to install from the Internet using PPP instead of DHCP. Still can’t get it to work :\
In the text part, I can get past the DHCP dialog–actually, it doesn’t make any difference whether I choose DHCP or enter a fixed address. Either way, it lets me get past that part. This is strange because my modem isn’t a DHCP server…and the dialog seems to accept any fixed IP address and subnet mask! Go figure.
In the next dialog, by entering an IP address for the HTTP server (instead of the domain name itself) it lets me go past to the directory dialog. But no matter which directory I enter, it tells me that it’s invalid. WTF!
You are not alone my pppoe works on my ubuntu pc (old pc). But my shiny new suse 11 install will not connect to the net. I cant figure it out.Im hoping to find a answer here for my problem!
Same problem. OpenSuse 11.0 will not install from the internet. Does anyone know if the older 10.x version work fine to install from the internet.
I don’t have a dvd writer so cannot burn the complete opensuse 11.0 (iso) from the web so i am using this option.
Note: YaST–>System–>Runlevel-Editor can be used to set the smpppd server to ON.
However, the article doesn’t seem to mention anything about the IP address. Another tutorial explained that it’s necessary to select static addressing, not dynamic via DHCP. AFAIK, any ‘dummy’ address will work, since it’s only there to initialize the process. I used…
IP: 192.168.22.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
If I find the other tutorial, then I’ll post it here.
