My net connection drops about every hour now after my latest kernel upgrade 2.6.27.21-0.1-pae. I’ve tried everything I can think of…any ideas?
Roll back to the previous kernel and see if you are ok again.
Yes. I thought about that…but unfortunately I have an ATI videocard and the fglrx driver seems to only work in this kernel. Hmm…any other ways to test the networking with this kernel?
Tell us about your network device pci? usb?
are we talking wired/wireless?
It’s wired. Actually, I just installed the 2.6.27.21-0.1-default kernel. Let me test this out and see if it drops again. I am almost 100 percent positive it was something with that kernel, because my connection never drops…I have a windows box hooked up to it also.
Ok it just dropped on this one too…that made no difference. Ok, it is a wired connection through the router. But it works just fine an stable on my windows dual boot on this system.
So you want to keep this kernel, then decide if you need PAE or not?!
Now tell us about the network device in your box, ie; on-board, PCI?
It’s onboard. VIA Rhine-II
I take it you have check in Yast Network Devices - Network Settings and have check the config there.
To be honest, all my box’s that have or have had on-board, I never use it, I just throw a D-Link PCI in there, as I know it just works no question.
lspci -k
or
lsusb -k
should show the device, depending if it’s classed as pci or usb. It will show the kernel module in use if any.
$ lspci -k
00:12.0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II] (rev 7c)
Kernel driver in use: via-rhine
Kernel modules: via-rhine
Yeah it’s possible it’s the kernel driver? In my var/log/messages I had alot of things going on with the DHCP…any possibility there?
Honestly if I had a free PCI slot I would use it. Saves all this.
ATM I can’t access some pages I need to help as the server seems to be down.
I’ll give it a shot and see what happens. I have an extra PCI card somewhere.
