Network disabled on a brand new HP laptop, while with Windows it obviously works :(

Hi all,
I bought a HP laptop “15-fd0067nl” (15", i71255U, 16Gb SDRAM SODIMM DDR4, 1TB HDU) and tried, before installing it, my beloved openSUSE Tumbleweed live (openSUSE-Tumbleweed-KDE-Live-x86_64-Snapshot20250714-Media).

Of course, I had to change the settings in the BIOS to allow booting from USB.
Linux starts but I don’t have networking (it says it’s disabled) so I don’t see WiFi.

Any ideas?

Post:
ip a
ping -c3 8.8.8.8
ping -c3 google.com
grep -i hosts /etc/nsswitch.conf
inxi -Naa

Sauerland, thank you for your reply!

I’ve tried both the KDE live and the XFCE live and the answers are pretty much the same (sigh!)
The only difference is that KDE simply tells me that ‘inxi’ doesn’t exist, while XFCE advises me how to install it using ‘zypper’.
P.S.: I also tried the commands with the root user and got the same answers.

— ip a
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN group default qlen 1000
link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo
valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
inet6 ::1/128 scope host noprefixroute
valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever

— ping -c3 8.8.8.8
ping: connect: Network is unreachable

— ping -c3 google.com
ping: google.com: Temporary failure in name resolution

— grep -i hosts /etc/nsswitch.conf

Valid databases are: aliases, ethers, group, gshadow, hosts,

hosts: files mdns_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns

— inxi -Naa
The program ‘inxi’ can be found in the following package:

  • inxi [ path: /usr/bin/inxi, repository: repo-oss ]

Try installing with:
sudo zypper install inxi

So post:

/sbin/lspci -nnk | grep -iA3 net

There are no network interfaces, so you are using some chip that is not supported by Linux kernel. Is it PCI, USB or what?

/sbin/lspci -nnk | grep -iA3 net

02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: MEDIATEK Corp. Device [14c3:7902] (rev 01)
        Subsystem: MEDIATEK Corp. Device [14c3:1ede]

Is there a way to edit my previous message using code-tags?

At the moment Tumbleweed is via USB but I will have to install it. The laptop, as per the first introductory post, is a brand new HP with everything on board, including Windows 11 (sigh!) which I will have to remove to install openSUSE TW.

Here in prehistoric Italy I have no longer found a serious laptop without Windows, unfortunately. My old Lenovo i3 and i5 were virgin and without junk, I installed Tumbleweed on them and it worked on the first hit.

As I can see, the Mediatek 7902 Chip is not supported by the linux Kernel for years.

There are a few git Repos to build the driver, but with other sub-ID’s as yours.

Oh no! I wish I knew a lot more swear words in English so I could express myself freely!
I bought this laptop because I was convinced that HP was the solution!
I will look, if I can find it, for the code for an additional driver to handle this chip and try to modify and adapt it, if I can (I haven’t written code for many years but they say it’s like learning to ride a bicycle, and you never forget that).
Using Windows after almost thirty years of Linux would really annoy me.

Sauerland and Arvidjaar, I thank you for your time and if you should have any other ideas, write to me here because I will keep an eye on this topic.

@andy1950 you should be able to find a replacement PCIe card to pop in there with a suitable chipset. Check out the system or service manual for the laptop.

Many others want to build the driver with ndiswrapper from the Microsoft driver, but that is not the best way.

Malcomlewis, do you mean open the laptop and replace the chip with a managed one? If it can be done I’ll try (OK, the warranty lapses immediately)

If you need Wlan, buy a cheap USB dongle.
It’s the better way…

@andy1950 yes, if it’s easy to do… find out if they (HP) provide alternative cards. Or as suggested a USB dongle… just make sure it’s realtek or intel… not broadcom.

Yes, I’m really thinking about it but I only have two USB ports, so I have to buy a good mini HUB that can handle the wifi dongle and the mouse dongle (unfortunately I MUST use a mouse and not the touchpad) without killing the battery… but this problem is solved quickly. YES, I will buy a Realtek or Intel dongle, as Malcomlewis suggests.

In any case, I’m also going to look at this… you never know!

No, the forum administrators decided that an Edit time-out of 10 minutes is enough.

Instead you could replace the Mediatek card, see this HP Maintenance and Service Guide page 39.
