I use a D-Link (VT86C100A)

You don’t say if you want a 100Mb or Gb NIC.

For quality, it’s hard to beat the Intel E1000 and E100 series. Servers usually come with these.

If you want to keep the cost down, 100Mb NICs based on the Tulip chipset are good. Macronix made a nice clone for this. I think D-Link also had one or two. Otherwise if you can’t find one, it doesn’t matter much, just go with the most common NIC out there, the RTL8139. It’s the chip with a logo looking like the claws of a lobster. These days with fast CPUs, NICs have ceased to be a significant load, and Linux drivers are pretty good at recovering from glitches.
