Network bridge kills wlan0

Hi everyone,
I have my PC and xbox in my room but the router is at the other end of the house. so my PC is connected to the internet through wlan0 and is working fine. But whenever i try to bridge my eth0 to wlan0 so that my xbox can use the internet, my wlan0 dies (firefox just says “looking up www.<blarg>.com”…).

Ive had a search around and have seen a few posts saying that setting up wireless bridges in yast doesn’t work, but have not seen any alternatives.

Can anyone help me getting this set up?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

The majority of wireless cards do not support full bridging due to the fact spoofing of the wireless card mac address is not allowed. Some wireless cards with the prism chipset do allow full bridging. I would suggest that it is your wireless card that is at fault and not Yast.

If your card supports WDS then you will be ok, most likely it does not.

Can anyone refer me to an in depth discussion of this problem because i have the same problem but I don’t understand why this networking problem even exists. I always thought ethernet was a logical layer seperated from, and on top of, the wifi layer. This would imply that the connecting wifi-node could just as easily be a bridge as a pc or a notebook and thus bridging should never pose a problem. The existance of the problem implies that ethernet and wifi aren’t completely seperated.
