I currently live in shared accomodation with friends and we are constantly arguing over the internet usage. We have unlimited downloads and a resonably fast connection speed (16mbps). I’m currently in charge of the wireless, but I’m wondering if there is any application that I could use to monitor where most of the usage is being used? Whether it be downloads, streaming, Xbox, Skype, general internet browsing etc. I’ve got wireshark but obviously I would have to run it constantly to keep records of everything. I’m not looking to snoop on what they are doing, just what they are using the connection for?

The ntop daemon (it has to run full time, obviously). You see the stats
using a web browser.

This again means running my laptop 24/7, I’m just looking for something that can provide a summary of network activity. Am barking up the wrong tree with more software when I should be thinking looking into my router settings or something like that? I’m a nub nub when it comes to router management
Hey Nub, I think your installation comes with netstat so you should probably learn how to use it. In the mean time why not try reading the linux manual…, any one will do.

If you have a high-end router with management capability, then you might get the
info from it. If you have a standard, consumer-grade router, then it will not
keep any such statistics, unless it is running openWRT, or similar, firmware.

I was going to say exactly that
