Nervous,Not Sure What To Do.

i was almost afraid to come here.i know how most forums work,i hope this one is different.
so,im a first time opensuse user.ive used “windows” all my life, but im starting to disagree with windows in general for personal reasons.that being said,i burned the latest stable copy of opensuse to dvd.i reset my router, all that jazz.
my concern was, when i first tried to install opensuse via dvd,i let it do its thing automatically.but as soon,as my pc rebooted,it got ugly.i let it load to the optons menu, when i can pick desktop or failsafe mode.after a few seconds,it chose one by itself, and the next thing i know,i have some kind of linux code all over my monitor.
like i said,as the partitioning setup alotted itself,in the installation options.all i did was click next.

wow,i cant even find the edit post option.well,im going to download gparted, wipe my partition table, and make a new one.after that, ill reinstall, see if i get the same error.

First welcome as a new user. This group has been helpful to me and in most
cases you will get some responses.

What kind of graphics card do you have? What version of openSUSE are you
trying to install and is it 32 bit or 64 bit.

When you down loaded the DVD did you select correct version and did you
check the md5sum before burning the DVD? Also what speed did you burn the
DVD at? There are some DVDs that need you to burn at a slow speed to get a
good DVD.

By posting this type information it will help other people help you.

Maybe worth a try, it’s also worth checking for an error on the DVD, though if the install went smoothly then there is no particular reason to suspect it, but I have definitely run into install problems due to a bad burn. You can check for a problem in the DVD from the menu that comes up immediately from booting off of the DVD, it’s one of the menu options though I don’t remember how it is worded.

Welcome to openSUSE. It’s quite a culture shift if all you are used to is Windows but it is a very rewarding one when you have made it. Do have a look at the information for new users on this site.

You don’t need to download gparted; if you want to reinstall completely wiping what is there, simply restart the install and when you get to partitioning, select expert or custom partition (I forget which it is) and tell it to use the whole disk. It will then set up the recommended three partitions from scratch using the whole disk (I am assuming from your post that you were not trying a dual book setup).

When you have completely finished the install - there is normally a reboot to move from the using kernel on the DVD to using the kernel on the hard drive - and you reboot, do not select failsafe as this is only for emergencies and you need to have some understanding of Linux to be able to use it effectively. Allow it to boot as normal and report back if you experience problems after that.

One other thought; the advantage of using a Live-CD is that you can check that there are no hardware problems first before you commit to installing; with the DVD, the openSUSE installer just makes best use of what it can find. With the Live-CD you may be able to detect a possible hardware problem and get advice from the forum before committing to an install.

Finally there is a time limit for editing posts on this forum.

thank you both for these responses,i wiped out my partition table with gparted, but im infailsafe mode now?so,ill start from the DVD,and make sure it uses the entire hard disk.sounds good.and correct,i considered it,but i doubt ill be dual booting windows.ill go do what you guys suggested, and report back to let you know what happens.thanks again.

hey guys,im back.unfortunately, using the entire hard disk, didnt help either.when i select failsafe mode, everything goes wonderful, but as soon as i allow it to boot the regular mode, well, theres that code again.=.

Also.my pc specifications.
ASUS CM5570
Everything On/In The Tower,Beside This OS,is what im using.
no special graphics card, just the one from the motherboard.
also,its 64-bit.
i made sure i downloaded the ISO image of the one that was X64"X86_64".

ok,i may have been getting ahead of myself.after reading a bit of the openSuse new users guide,i suggested to my self, maybe it *could be a graphics card issue.i read somemore, and after issuing the “nomodeset” command only with my desktop boot,it boots wonderfully, except my desktop was cut off in the top left corner of the screen.=.ill get back to you, becuase i need to make it permanent.=]

ok so now,i can download updates.e.g. the newest firefox, but how do i install them?please excuse me for my frustrations.i didnt think switchin to opensuse could be so hard.if i could fix my system,i mean, optimize it completely, what should i do?i mean, the speed of it,everything.i dont know if its just me,but my pc seems slow.as in,i have a terabyte and 6GB of RAM installed hardware wise.but its not feeling like that.is there an opensuse tool i can get from anywhere that will tell me what exactly is wrong with my PC?thanks in advance

Installs are normally done in a program called Yast which you will find in your menu.

When you select nomodeset you are using an simple video driver. This should work with all cards but we don;t know what card you have. ie what chip is on that mother boards

You should read the following

Why do you want to install anything, if you said it was not displaying correctly, only the half left
top part of the display?

Don’t install anything.

And what reads that text? If you want help, you have to be precise

Please be patient, go slowly.
Explain each problem you want help with precision and detail.

Ok.
A:Im pissed enough that on my first linux install, its going crappy.
B:I already posted my PC specs,if youre looking for me to google that,no.
C:INTEL GM43/45 Chipset.
D:im now using the opensuse studio to create my own build, since i cant get the regular “stable” build to run properly.

Last But not Least,Please.Just because its my first time in opensuse, doesnt mean i know nothing of linux.
linux has and always will be a wonderful OS,but please, dont even start with the smart remarks.
i came here for help,if you dont want to,thats your choice.but you smart remarks, arent helping me any.

EDIT:on my first boot, after install,no matter what i select,i get “code” all over my monitor, then it stops,at some kind of unexpected error coming from sbin/some folder.the only way i can get in,is failsafe.

i dont know if i can replicate the text in the error.
all functions stop, and the only key functions that seem to work, are ctrl+alt+delete.

Take a picture maybe? Write it down on a piece of paper.

Our spy satellite is down and we can not see what you see.

You need to give us a clue.

well, after hours and hours of trying to get Back to the setup i was trying to achieve.i got it running, but halfway.
few problems left are:
A.The bootloader doesnt seem to like me,everytime i install,i get that message in red,“on a partition below 128gb”…"system might not boot."so,how can i reinstall or update my bootloader from opensuse 11.3?
B:this was THE biggest problem of the whole entire install.my graphics drivers.
i installed the gnome desktop without any drivers loaded,it worked ok,but now theres no color.=
so,my mistake for saying anything rude,i was frustrated, and asking for help.
is there a way to verify my opensuse is install properly?

What you should do is take it one step at a time.

1- from what I can gather your asus cm5570 uses the intel GMA X4500, which in the page that gogalthorp mentioned is referred to as the G45
2- use the normal DVD do a complete new install using your whole drive (since you done that before it cant make it worse)
3- boot up using normal mode and give us at least the error message your getting, either as a picture taken with your mobile or write it over
4- optional while you wait for people to figure out your problem you follow this guide: SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE

Also remember your not making it easy for others to help you if you change the playing field as fast as you do now, you went from some code over the screen to gparted (sorry never used it myself before) to reading up to use nomodeset, to opensuse builder where you made your custom install, to gnome (which means you probably tried KDE 1st), to half a screen and back to some code and all that in 6 hours or so

That “some code” you mentioned is probably the most important part people need to know so they can help you, yet you skip over it as if its trivial, it might be but we never know till we see it ?

i agree,i was quite out of line.i’m not used to people actually wanting to help,so i took something serious as a joke.hmm.let me see if i can replicate that error.if i take a picture with my mobile, i just send it here?or email?im still having quite some troubles, but ill take the picture, then ill see what we can do from there.=]

ok.i got the image, with all the code in it.=].
if anyone has any idea, please let me know what i should do…

also, after checking into the proper GRUB setting,i noticed i have 2 listed.
(hd0,0) and (hd0,4)
just to check on my partition structure,
i opened terminal and ran “fdisk -l”

Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x0008476b

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 65271 524288000 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 65271 91380 209713152 82 Linux swap / Solaris

/dev/sda6 93992 121600 221767680 83 Linux

when all i have is 1 physical hard drive is that normal?i dont remember making a /dev/sda3 partition, wouldnt dare make it bootable…=\
