nepomuk/virtuoso question

my understanding is that 4.4 final will incorporate virtuoso 6, necessitating a metadata database conversion for previous virtuoso 5 installs… will this be a user procedure or will the packagers script the conversion in the upgrade rpm?

AFAIK normal procedure would be to do this through scripting in the package.

I just renamed the virtuoso folder to get it working. The error message
wasn’t a great deal of help as it just said version 6 can’t read databases
made with earlier versions. It didn’t offer any solutions - or I didn’t see
them if it did.

Is backward compatibility a lost art? Part of my job as long as thirty years
ago involved redesigning a database along with its population and retrieval
software. I made sure that the retrieval software recognised which version
of the database it was dealing with and coped with it. Mind you, perhaps
things were easier then with Fortran, JCL and CLISTs.

Saw it happening yesterday, on a friends machine after updating from KDE4 4.3.1 to 4.4.0: a notification that database conversion was going on and might take a while.

AFAICS that would answer the question. Haven’t seen the virtuoso folder item issue anyway.

That looks like it has coped with 4.3.1 to 4.4.0 but not 4.3.98 to 4.4.0.
Curious. Perhaps it’s just my bad luck.

Any idea why Redland has suddenly become essential to 4.4.0? At RC3 , I
uninstalled it without a single complaint from YAST but now I see 259
dependencies on it.

I don’t have Redland installed and don’t get any dependency issues. My indexing seems to be working fine but my searches always return no files found. Could this be because I need Redland?

The Virtuoso backed is recommended over the Redland one as the latter is too
slow, so it should work. Having said that, I can’t get a search of all my
files to return anything either. Nor can I configure Nepomuk at the moment
as clicking on the sys-tray icon does nothing - I can see a reboot coming up
to attempt to get it back.

Is there any way to keep the icon in the sys-tray when no indexing is
happening? And on a related issue, Akonadi is also supposed to be configured
via its sys-tray icon but there is never one, so how do we get around that?

I seem to have the same problem - everything worked fine in 4.3.98, but now it doesn’t anymore. That is to say:

*) tags can be found through the dolphin search, not through krunner
*) filenames, contacts or text-in-pdfs cannot be found at all.

I’ve tried the virtuoso converter, adding the redland dir, the redland & java software, removing all of my nepomuk data, but to no avail so far.

+1 I’m having the exact same issues and tried every one of those fixes. I even tried this: Socceroos: Kubuntu Karmic, KDE 4.4 and Nepomuk

frankly i’m sorry i even brought it up to start with…

much ado about nothing.

disappointing is not a strong enough word, fubar seems appropriate.

I’m glad you brought it up.

I was beginning to think I was the only one that couldn’t get it working properly.

Honestly, I don’t think anyone has it working properly.

Mine works fine.

Read this thread.

Nepomuk semantic desktop is not working - openSUSE Forums

When you say it’s working, do you mean you can just open up Dolphin and search for something by name (not tagged) and it’ll find it?

One I noticed is that if you click on the nepomuk icon in the sys tray, mine always says “Indexed files: Calculating…” Is this a sign of something not working properly?

I’ve never had problems with errors coming up about indexing or any of these Redland issues but my searches have never worked in Dolphin. They did work in Krunner for a bit in RC3 before I upgraded to SC4.4.0.

I’ve now deleted the nepomuk folder and config files and will see what happens when the new index is built.

Tried all that stuff.

Still didn’t work so I gave up.

The nepomuk search in dolphin problem should be fixed now. The problem was we missed a kdebase-runtime tarball update before 4.4.0 was officially released that resolved a Virtuoso 5->6 difference. Andreas Demmer and Sebastian Trueg troubleshooted the problem and notified us and 4.4.0 is now rebuilding in KKFD. There is a new changelog entry in kdebase4-runtime so you can check if you have this fix.

I have taken steps to make sure we packagers get notified on every tarball change at the official KDE download page so we can’t make mistakes like this in future. Thanks for you perseverance with this problem.

Thank you Mr. Stephenson.

Is there a particular syntax one is supposed to use with the search in Dolphin? I updated kdebase4-runtime that included the change you mentioned and search results in Dolphin still return “No Items Found”.
