I guess I would have to use xmodmap to do this. I already used XEV to find out that the button I need changed was keycode 22. I have a Dell Vostro 1500 and I want the remote control to have a different function. Thanks.

xmodmap is deprecated and incompatible with setxkbmap (widely used in different places to set up keyboard layout and other properties). As soon as setxkbmap is started, xmodmap will stop working together with all keycodes to functions user mappings. You might be able to assign a function to a key at user level within the desktop environment you’re using.
