Hi I am Jahid Hasan Mehedi from Bangladesh. I am new to forum. I am using Linux for about 2 years.
I am going to buy AMD Phenom II X4 955/975 Processor & supported motherboard for my new pc in couple of months. Could you refer some AMD supported motherboads that are compatible & works out of the box with Opensuse 11.3/11.4.
Thanks in advance…
Hello hasan65. I HIGHLY recommend the GIGABYTE GA-790XTA-UD4. Gigabyte makes very solid motherboards. I have never had a problem while updating the BIOS with Gigabyte, something I can not say about others (such as MSI for instance). I was able to to push the AMD Phenom II X4 955 up to 3.4 GHz with no trouble. I did buy a Zilman cpu cooling fan to replace the stock AMD fan just to make sure the slight over clock would not over heat the CPU. I am not sure what your options are, but if it includes Gigabyte, then go for it and good luck. Also, welcome to the openSUSE forums. Don’t forget that openSUSE 11.4 comes out in just four days.
Thank You,
I really like the motherboard. Thank you very much for the fantastic motherboard.
I am a University student My main task in pc are
1 Running ftp (for friends outside home network), samba, cups server (for sharing with windows machine)
2 working on database (learning stage)
3 Word Procesing, Presntation for assignment
4 A little bit coding…

I will also say that the Gigabyte boards are great for linux.
I have 2 x MA790XT-UD4P and a MA790X-DS4 here with Phenoms in one has a tri
core which using the bios has the 4th core enabled, it has been running 24/7
doing BOINC stuff + using an ATI4830 GPU as well for over a year now solid
with only a couple of reboots for kernel updates etc.
All work out of the box with Linux, sound, net etc…
My main machine has a 965 Black overclocked just slightly ( 3500 instead of
3400, it could easily go higher but the cooling is a prob here ) with 8gigs
ram this also runs 24/7 doing BOINC or playing stuff using an ATI6870 GPU.
All on 11.3 and the boards are just fine, I did have a slight prob with the
UD4P not being able to run the tri core and got in touch with the Gigabyte
support and they sorted it out for me, it was a flaky bios setting ( my fault
itchy fingers ) they replied promptly and did not call me a blind buffaloon
because I could not see the problem even though it was staring me in the
face
I will be upgrading shortly to a 6 core and a new board and will have no
hesitation of going with a Gigabyte again.
Disclaimer:
I have no connections with them I am just a happy user
