Need recommendation for device to extend range of my wifi (modem/router)

Hello. I’m in the USA using SuSE 13.2 with KDE 4.14.9. My internet service is provided by ATT. They have supplied me with a combination modem/router made by NetGear, model B90-755025-15.

I need to extend its wifi broadcast range to reach a camera that is mounted outside my house, approximately 80-90 feet away from the modem/router, and on the other side of three interior walls and one wall of windows.

Can anyone suggest a unit available in the USA that will extend the wifi broadcast range of my modem/router so I can get signal to/from the camera, is compatible with Linux (obviously), can be secured along with my modem/router, and is really simple to set up? (Emphasis on REALLY simple.)

Many thanks.

Hi
Jump on Amazon and search for “netgear wifi extender” should give you a
reasonable list to work from. Is the camera N or G speed?

I have a dd-wrt setup (linksys router) as an extender, G speed to
clients, N on the back haul to the main wireless router (Motorola).

I only need the extender out to about 50 feet which it works fine at G
speed.

Do you have a smart phone or android device? If so add a wifi signal
scanner to help identify positioning of your router to get max
coverage, then look at putting the extender there…

If you have a laptop, one of the users here wrote a wifi plotter
application, I have it packaged up on OBS (enabled the 13.2 build) so
shoul;d be here at some point;

Malcolm, I do not know and must wait until Monday to call the company to get the answer “N” or “G.” As soon as I know I’ll post the answer.
As for looking on Amazon, I don’t see any that say they’re Linux compatible. A few mention Windows or Mac. So how do I know which to buy
that will work with Linux?

Sorry, every word of this went over my head. :expressionless:

We have Android phones on which my wife and I are supposed to be able to monitor the camera.
As for adding a wifi signal scanner, is that an app for the phone? I cannot move my router from where it is and I’m not understanding what you mean by “…positioning of your router to get max coverage, then look at putting the extender there…” Sorry, but can you explain in simpler to understand terms?

What is a wifi plotter? Again, sorry, but this is all unfamiliar territory for me.
Thx
Gil

It’s not a operating system issue, as long as the routers talk to each
other and normally they (routers, extenders) have a web page for
configuration. Or in some cases use WPS for the initial connection.

You need to confirm about the camera, just to make sure it’s on the
normal g or n frequency, or maybe it’s only a 5GHz device ratherthan
2.4Ghz band. Best to check, but I would guess it’s either n or g 2.4GHz.

No worries…

Basically it’s an application that can look at the signal from your
wireless device, in the first case you want to check where you can go
in the dwelling and monitor the wireless signal from the router (Think
of rings expanding out when you throw a rock in the water)…

On an android device I use an app called wifi analyzer to determine
where to place an extender. Then monitor from the extender to see where
devices can go.

Like I say, you need to confirm some details about the camera device,
to make sure you select something that will be compatible.

Malcolm, I just found out – it’s 802.11G

I have ordered a NetGear WN3000RP wifi range extender. Hope to have that soon and will see if things improve. Might even help my wife when she’s using her cell phone and/or tablet in the bedroom.

The past day or two I’ve actually been getting reasonably steady transmissions from the camera.

I’ll post additional details once I get the wifi range extender configured and installed, and determine its optimal placement.

Thanks again for your help.
