Need precise help on all types of video playback

I tried myself to add repo’s, download rpm’s so that I can run all sort of videos, but problem never seems solved. I also tried forums where all the different ways are mentioned for installing the codec’s. I suppose I messed up all the codec’s. So I re formatted the hard drive and now I am with fresh installation of SUSE 11.0 with KDE and GNOME installed…Cam somebody guide me step by step what all I need do to run all types of video’s on my system. I am using Pentium 4 – sis mother board (I don’t feel there is any driver problem)…Please guide me exact steps i.e. what all rep’s to be added or removed and what all needed for playing all the video in simple lucid language as I am new to this world of Linux. These steps would help millions of people who are in same situation.

Have you tried the 1-click install method found here Restricted Formats/11.0 - openSUSE-Community Also, if you need precise instructions, we need to know precisely what video/audio/dvd programs you will be using

Andy

i have tried that one click install but - totem keffine dose not work, i also installed m player still no video seen… although it works perfectly with ubuntu … i need to play DVD’s with full feature support like menu’s - i also need to play WAV,MVK,Xvid,Divx,avi,mp4 etc… i mainly have problems with video - audio works perfectly…

moreover i am totally confused with repo’s that are to be used and that are not to be used or say removed. Thats why i freshly installed SUSE 11.0 …

give us the terminal output of:

zypper lr

then we can see what repo’s you have

sir, fresh installation nothing changed till now - so please suggest from starting point. considering default rep’s installed
i haven’t added or removed a bit from default installation…

let this post be the tutorial for the new to linux and the people who have fresh installation of SUSE linux…

try this too
http://opensuse-community.org/codecs-gnome.ymp

this is already been tried and some body already posted same in the thread of this forum previously… that thing doesn’t work.
moreover this is not about trial and error where you say try this or that.
this post clearly states that steps for running the video needed. It is about the people who are in SUSE Linux since long, and do they have exact steps that needs to be followed after fresh installation.
just look at the post’s in this forum 70 to 75% people have the same problem of video play backs and there are n number of ways mentioned in reply, so why not standardized the reply and make the exact steps that needs to be followed after fresh installation for SUSE 11.

so sir, please give me the exact steps with rep’s or RPM’s so that i can run the above mentioned videos easily.

Restricted Formats/11.0 - openSUSE-Community

and

http://opensuse-community.org/codecs-gnome.ymp

are not the same

earlier I asked:

give us the terminal output of:

zypper lr

then we can see what repo’s you have

How about it?

find the output for zypper lr

Ok. You need to Go to Yast - Software- Repositories

If you have High speed internet, disable the DVD (No.3 in the list)

Add: VLC
Index of /pub/vlc/SuSE/11.0/
finish

Now in Software Management
filter by repo
select the VLC repo you just added
and scroll down to ‘libdvdcss’ and check to install.
accept

(Incidentally, you can access the repository manager from the software manager from the top menu’s)

Now once that is done - Disable the VLC repo

Now with the repository manager add this:Packman
Index of /pub/linux/misc/packman/suse/11.0
finish

Back to Software Management
filter by repo and select Packman

add the following to install or update
k3b
k3bcodecs
amarok
w32codec-all
vlc
libdvdnav4
libdvdread3
libdvdread4
libxine1-codecs
libdvdplay0
libxine1
libxvidcore4
mplayer
smplayer

I think that’s about it
You will need to accept vendor change to Packman with some packages

Dear all,

steps followed as mentioned above but still DVD playback error

following errors
Mplayer- No stream found to handle url dvd://1
totem - Cannot play this type of media (DVD) because ir does not have appropriate plug in to be able to read from disc.
VLC - Your input can’t be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL ‘dvd:///dev/sr0’. Check the log for details.
Kaffeine - This has reduced set of support codecs

check you have
libffmpeg0
xvidcore

No good happned even after installing all the files including 2 mentioned in last - i.e. 167MB of total files from internet.

is it really so difficult for the peoples who are into this SUSE to help with this…

now what should i do…

give us the output from the following:

rpm -qi vlc smplayer w32codec-all libdvdcss libffmpeg0

don’t worry, when you open that movie again it will resume at the same point
you left it, and with the same settings: audio track, subtitles, volume…

i have installed gstreamer from packman - and totem is displaying the movie - but menus are not yet sighted

moreover no other player works…

request help . .

Up to where I know gstreamer still doesn’t supports DVD menus correctly. You should be able to obtain something compiling the dvdnav plugin, that I thing still isn’t compiled by default (and Packman doesn’t includes it). And even if you had a gstreamer with DVD menus support I think Totem disables it so they don’t receive bug reports because of the buggy gstreamer plugin.

Totem-xine should be able to play the menus (also the latest mplayer, vlc and any xine-based video player).

no other player working as of now except totem - request help…

Have you checked in Yast Software Management
filter by repo
are there any blue or red showing in Packman or any others?

I can’t understand the difficulty you are having.

Perhaps you should just clarify what is working or NOT and if Not what is happening there.
Make sure you have done a reboot.

Maybe you should just do the onclick for the following:

Codecs KDE: http://opensuse-community.org/codecs-kde.ymp

Codecs Gnome: http://opensuse-community.org/codecs-gnome.ymp

you need to do one then the other and you will need root password

To help us see what you have installed, please copy and paste here the exact/precise output of the following commands (run one at a time):
rpm -qa | grep layer
rpm -qa | grep gst
rpm -qa | grep ffmpeg
rpm -qa | grep xine
zypper lr
