I need some mercy. I’ve just started Linux on a nice new build and can’t get any traction on learning how to use it. I only just realized I’m still on Leap 42.1. I had thought all these smooth software updates were updating version, but I guess not.
Do I have to reinstall the whole OS? And as a newb looking for stuff that works, should I upgrade to 42.2 or 42.3? Don’t know how to go about this…
Yast / software quits on me, I found a command line workaround but lost it. And I’m not clear on basic install procedures or mounting my drives. I really need a clear manual. But haven’t found anything obvious.
HBO Now recently stopped working on Chrome, so I’m really hoping a version update will get it back.
Do I read the GNOME User Guide if I’m running the plasma version? I’m guessing not. I am in the tall weeds here and could use a break. I feel totally helpless.
No, that would take deliberate action on your part.

You can upgrade in-situ, by changing the applicable repos to 42.2 versions and running ‘zypper dup’. You should be fully updated before you start the process as well as backing up any important data. Read the following guide thoroughly and ask questions if you’re not sure about anything…

Hang in there. It takes effot and a bit of patience when first starting your Linux journey, but we’re here to help you as well.
Gnome and KDE Plasma are two of many possible desktop environments you can use. Linux is all about choice
Leap is the static version of openSUSE and progresses in steps at about 18 month intervals but Tumbleweed is the rolling version thus always close to the cutting edge. But you may bleed when you ride the cutting edge
You can upgrade via zypper dup as mentioned but you can also upgrade via DVD or USB,
Personally I keep two root partitions one for the current and one for the last version and do a fresh install to the oldest this allows testing and fall back when a new version is released. Since program install is very easy I just re install my needed programs to the new version. All my personal data and settings are in my home partition I just mount that to the new when I feel it is all nice and stable.
