hello all
with suse 12.1 almost ready to ship, i would like to ask some help with software selection. i am with suse since 1999, and since then started using linux extensively for audio and video creation, editing, burning, ripping, copying and compiling. my problem is that i do not know how much software is sufficient, so i download and install all software packages, codices, plugins, extensions, and converters i can find. i so totally know that i have got a ton of redundancies on my machines, and i would love to streamline, just have got no idea how. any help is greatly appreciated. in particular i like to:
– convert video tapes to digital (i have got the hardware)
– rip / backup dvd
– rip / backup audio cd
– import and edit video from cams
– play commercial dvd, multi-region
– digitize vinyl records / audio tapes
– voice overs
other interest are
– cli internet / networking (though i still totally at the beginning of that road)
– photograph manipulation
– python programming
thanks in advance … theo
these are my opinions (others will probably have other opinions) for the
ones i use:

Well if you already have lots of different applications, I suggest you
start by listing those that you use a lot, or like a lot, or hate but
absolutely have to use sometimes.
Then create a new system, presumably based on 12.1, and install those
programs. You can make it a virtual system if you don’t have spare hardware.
Then try using it! If it works and you’re happy, all well and good. If
there’s something wrong, fix it.
