I want to install opensuse 12.3 because it is what was on the laptop that died and my wife likes it.
The new PC is a Dell Inspiron 15/15R/M531R, windows 8.1 (probably been erased and I don’t care to dual boot).
The DVD that I have is the Live version of Opensuse, 12.3 64 bit
I finally was able to get the PC to boot from the DVD and went through the install but when I try to boot from the HDD, it tells me that there is no bootable media.
its curious that the install did not recognize win 8.1 and ask me if I wanted to dual boot. Also that I don’t recall seeing anything dealing with grub.
I took all the defaults during the install and I think that I remember seeing an option for an MBR. I think it was unchecked and I don’t know if that was proper.
I also have the full DVD Of opensuse 12.3 but apparently it is not bootable.
So, I am stuck.
Could you point me to a link on how to go about doing this ?
Is this a totally new computer or an older one that was fixed?
If new then the DVD must be booted as EFI not MBR there should be a choice presented by the BIOS (EFI) May need to press some key at boot to get the selection screen, read the docs
If it is older then it is probably MBR and if not dual booting the MBR should be written to the boot record. If dual booting well it depends.
Need to pay attention at the partition scheme and not just blindly accept defaults. Be sure they are what you want and or need
13.1 probably plays a bit nicer with UEFI BIOS’s then 12.3
Yes it’s totally new.
The partition scheme should be the most simple there can be. This PC will be used for email, web browsing and watching Korean streaming videos.
what would you suggest for a partition scheme ?
Is there some reason that after the install, it can’t boot from the HDD. I know that there is some reason but I sure don’t know what it is.
Maybe I will download 13.1
13.1 was the answer and I must say that the installation was a whole lot less painful than 12.3. Kudos to the developers especially the bits dealing with the networking.
