arrow down to select “Memory Test” and let it run until you see
errors or overnight, at least…
i expect you will find problems…if so, and you have multiple sticks
of RAM you might be able to take all but one out and go through
several trials to learn which stick OR socket is failing…
if RAM checks then i’d look for other problems: shorts, bad grounds,
leaking capacitors, faulty cables, tired/failing power supply unit,
cracked circuit board…
well, if you have a Live CD can you boot from it and run a live session?
Newcommer - lost, confused and becoming highly frustrated
Hi, I have a Acer travelmate 2482WXMi, as secondary PC, I’ve been having some problems for a while, did restore to factory settings with Alt F10 - during restore system crashed with blue screen of death. Took PC to technicians who then reformatted hard drive and uploaded new bios, worked fine for about a week, then system crash again - blue screen of death, again - tired of windows now installing OpenSUSE. downloaded OpenSUSE 12.2 iso through utorrent last week, checked SHA1 and MD5 values using gizmo manager, burned to DVD using primary PC (Acer travelmate 5742) at slowest speed possible using gizmo. When I do a media check on secondary PC it says checksum wrong, and if I then continue it says file:/var/adm/mount/boot/i386/common: SHA1 checksum wrong. I then did a media check on primary PC and all is well. I then read something about old drives differing from new ones, So I found an old PC and burned it from there with NERO with disk verification, still same error when I do a media check on secondary PC, so I re-downloaded ISO, checked MD5 and SHA1 values again - same as on the web, again, burned it again - same error or some other error or run+=socket error so I assumed DVD drive might be faulty, so I made a LiveUSB using SUSE Image Writer and that gives me an blanc screen even before finishing system analysis. . .
Any ideas or just scrap the PC for the nickel and gold inside?
I was not aware that our PC’s are a source of gold/nickel? Anyway jokes apart, it seems that your problems are mainly from not being able to create an install disk. A posibility is to buy the disk, which will be shipped to you. So when you install via USB at which point you get a blank screen? what steps are you able to do? well I understand your frustation but at the other end you’ll not have blue screens! I don’t miss those at all! good luck!

I moved the above posts from another thread … but I see the temporal (time) order is reversed in the thread with " dd’s " reply appearing first. Apologies for that but its a function of the admin tools available and I can’t help it. Note for all that it was DeWetNel who started this thread and who is looking for assistance (and not ‘dd’ ).

You thread has a realy lousy title. Everybodu coming to this forums needs help, that is why they come here.
You need to advertise your problem to get the best and quickest help by using a good telling title.
OK, if I get you right, until that point you didn’t try a single install of openSUSE, but just tried to get your laptop running under windows.
For sure I don’t want to complain about that.
My point is a completely other one:
if you have real problems with your laptop under windows - for which it probably was designed for (!) -
then, how can you expect that openSUSE would cure everything ?
Of course you can try to install openSUSE, but under these conditions it is absolutely unlikely that this will cure your problem.
I would say that it rather is likely that the hardware of your laptop has some damage.
Or that the BIOS of your laptop still may be buggy.
All fine.
But in your place I would wait until openSUSE 12.3 comes out, which should have some issues fixed that 12.2 didn’t fix yet.
Give 12.3 a try.
The other point still remains:
You probably still have a warranty for your laptop!
In that case It would be absolutely irrational if you wouldn’t make use of that to get your laptop running under windows before installing everything else.
Do you believe in wonders ?
In this case I do not:
it would be a wonder if your laptop would run under openSUSE while it fails to do so under windows !
