I received this private message from B33P3R, and think the forum is the best place for it:
Hello,
I’m really sorry to bother you, but it seems like you’re the only person who can help me right now.
I’ve recently bought an HP Compaq 6715s (AMD Sempron 3800+ & ATI X1250).
The problem is, I can successfully install any kind of Windows I want (XP, Vista or even 7) but it seems to have big trouble with Linux for some unknown reason.
I’ve tried Fedora, Ubuntu & openSUSE.
So far, openSUSE 11.1 DVD was the most successful one with a noapci boot.
The installation procedure starts normally, but I’m getting stuck because it can’t find any HDD - even though I have one on this computer and it even has Windows installed and running fine!
Do you have any clues?
Did you have any similar issues while installing openSUSE to your computer?
Please help me, I’m lost…
Thanks a lot in advance!
I had no problems booting from the DVD. What error messages are you getting? Are you doing an “automatic/default” installation where partitions and partition size are suggested automatically? Does the installation stop?
As I was telling you, I’ve tried to install Fedora 10 & Ubuntu 8.10 and I would end up with a blank screen.
I figured out from different forums that it was an APCI problem.
Since I wanted to try openSUSE for a time now, and since you can easily choose a “no apci” installation mode, I’ve downloaded openSUSE 11.1 DVD, checked the MD5, burned it and decided to install it!
The problem that I’m getting is that when openSUSE does a hardware check, there’s a pop-up window saying something like “no HD found - please check your hardware” (sorry - I try to install it in french, so I don’t know the exact translation).
Then, when it comes to partitioning, there’s a red message telling that there are no HD in the computer.
But, I’m sure there is one since I can install and run whatever version of Windows I want!
Here are some specs about my laptop:
HP Compaq 6715s
AMD Sempron 3800+ (2.2 GHz.)
ATI X1250
80 GB HD 5400 rpm SMART SATA
Here’s the information about the installation:
Language: French
Kernel: NO APCI
The rest is standart I guess.
Do you have an idea where this problem might come from?
Shrink NTFS with Gparted Live CD. That may work. I did that on my laptop which had preloaded Vista and other junks
(spreading over all five primary partitions) supplied by Dell.
