Need a Gnome 3 Guru...

Hey guys, been a while since the last time I used openSUSE (11.2 to be exact) and after hearing that it was one of the 2 distros officially supporting Gnome 3 as of now, thought I’d dust off the old Mac partition and replace Ubuntu Unity (nasty gui) with something a little better. Now, off to the problems!

1.) Have a feeling this is just a driver issue, but can’t seem to figure it out for some reason. Computer is a Macbook Pro 4,1 sporting an Nvidia 8600GT card, so should DEFINITELY be good for Gnome Shell, yet it thrust me into fallback mode upon reboot after updating to Gnome 3. Any help finding the proprietary driver that Nvidia just released would be amazing, as I hear that it improves support anyway.

2.) Network Manager applet is gone and not starting upon boot. I would just troll the forums for the answer to this one, but I can’t really find too much openSUSE related gnome 3 information in the first place!

I’m sure most of these problems are just human error on my part as most seem to be able to install Gnome 3 without much of a problem, but I have no idea what’s wrong with this install. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Whelp, I’m dumb. How the hell could I forget about YaST!? Driver issue fixed, but still need help with the applet. Now that I can see Gnome Shell…why hate on it?

Hi
Check in YaST -> Network Devices and ensure your set to use the NetworkManager and not traditional ifup.

Any idea how to get the wireless working? That brought back the applet but network manager won’t detect any wireless networks.

Hi
Can you check it’s not blocked;

/usr/sbin/rfkill list

You may need to install the rfkill package.

Hey, thanks for the quick response! Just installed the rfkill package and this is the terminal spit:

0: hci0: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

Network manager doesn’t even acknowledge that wireless is possible, just gives me the option of turning on/off the wired connection

Hi
So the hardware is not even seen… No pyhsical swithes, BIOS entries to check? You might need to start a new thread in the wireless sub forum, also check the stickies there.

Nope, nothing. Guess I’ll move this over there, totally forgot there was a wireless forum lol. Thanks for the help!
