NAS and firewall problem

I’m running OpenSuse 11.4 and have just got a Synology DS212j NAS with a 1 Tb hard drive.

The lights are all on on the NAS and my router recognises it as a device.

However, when I switch off the opensuse firewall, running the configuration software sees the NAS, no problem. With the firewall switched on, it tells me that there is no such server attached to the system, doesn’t see it at all.

I’m guessing there is an exception switch or custom rule of some sort in the firewall that I need to set - but am not sure what to set. All services seem to be allowed in the “internal zone”. Maybe it sees this drive as “external zone”?

OK

Looks like I was having a particular problem with the “Synology Assistant” to set the drive up.

It uses the UDP protocol rather than TCP.

So, in YAST, go to Firewall and Custom Rules.
In the External zone, just make an entry for the IP address of the server and its subnet mask - and now Synology Assistant can see it.

I’m just hoping I haven’t screwed anything else up …
