Having a problem with name resolution over a dialup connection.
SuSE 11.1 with qinternet installed on a Thinkpad X31 connected to a Hayes Accura 56K.
YaST2 | Network Devices | Modem | Connection parameters show the following enabled:
Modify DNS When Connected
Automatically Retrieve DNS.
qinternet Configuration:
auto-dns=yes
dns1 = <blank>
dns2 = <blank>
modify-dns = yes
modify-ip = yes
qinternet log:
pppd[0]: local IP address 4.22.212.128
pppd[0]: remote IP address 4.68.248.4
pppd[0]: primary DNS address 207.69.188.187
pppd[0]: secondary DNS address 207.69.188.186
pppd[0]: Script /etc/ppp/ip-up finished (pid 29441), status =0x0
Status is: connected
Firewall temporary disabled
Firefox or Konqueror can’t find the server at openSUSE.org
Or any of six other known good urls
Not a hardware problem; same machine/modem with a different harddisk running SuSE 11.0 and kinternet works.
Hope I’m on the right track here. Make sure Network Manager is not running, as that can cause problems for modem users. I remember an old thread discussing this.

can FF or Konq connect to http://157.166.224.25/
have you tried disabling IPv6?
what DNS does your provider suggest you use…i see that the modem is
locking on to 207.69.188.187 and …186 is that what you expected?
while the modem is connected up, run the following code in a terminal
cat /etc/resolv.conf
then copy/paste post the last few lines (the ones not beginning with
#) back to this forum thread, please…

First, disabling Network Manager allowed name resolution to work reliably. Also I have Network Manager running in two instances of SuSE 11.0 where there is no dialup name resolution problem, though there could be other configuration differences that might exist in the offending SuSE 11.1 installation.
With the idea that disabling Network Mgr might be a blunter fix than other suggestions, I tried them with Network Mgr enabled:

Earthlink seems to have had a Microsoft lobotomy, offers only a Windows “access” application, and doesn’t publish any IP settings that I can find. I’ve always used DCHP and dynamic DNS The settings I showed in my original post work correctly for this machine, when running the HD with SuSE 11.0, another machine running 11.0 and a Mac using similar settings.

Thanks, so far for the suggestions.

Thanks for the update. I think you may be correct here. I occasionally used dialup thru 10.X (albeit with KDE3 and knetworkmanager running), and don’t remember this being an issue either. However, from other threads I’ve read or assisted with, it looks like having network manager running is now a show stopper if using dialling utilities concurrently.

back when i was dialing in, and also using an ISP that thought MS was
the only way go, i learned to use a file editor to just look inside
the modem “driver” supplied by the ISP (which was nothing even near a
‘driver’) and found setup information for the modem command line AND
primary/secondary DNS servers and other must know stuff…
another trick was just go to a friend using the same ISP via Win and
take a peek inside their registry: there is all the stuff you need to
know to dial in!!

heh! i can only guess that that changed --among other things-- which
was corrected by shutting down network manager…
now that you are connect, try it again…i expect at least one name
server to be listed…
