We are looking to build a database using mysql. At work they are investigating Adobe Flex as the user interface building tool. What would you recommend in Linux?
I am starting from scratch. My only experience is in web and filemaker. Where should I start, and what will I need? Beside lots of time?
What are your needs from the tools you build? Flex works on Linux I
believe… Novell has a tool being written that utilizes it
(http://support.novell.com/advisor/) along with Java to do some remote
diagnostic work.
Good luck.

It really does depend on what data you want to store and what you want to do with it. Lots of programs can use mysql as a backend. So you only need a special frontend if you are wanting to do something unusual or specific to your place of work.
It is important that you answer the other questions about your intent,
though… it may be you are reinventing the wheel, which isn’t going to
be worth your time.
Good luck.

I need to rebuild an existing database that is a workflow process tool. It need multiple working modes for various functions with varying permissions of input. It will track a project through all of it stages from inception, manufacturing, and upkeep. There is legacy data that will be incorporated. In addition we would prefer the gui to be web based because it also must be cross platform. We are having some stability problems with the current db and are looking for a more suitable option.
Yes, I think so. If this is then for end users writing your own
application make sense… originally I thought you were looking for an
administration tool for MySQL. One thing you wrote doesn’t make sense…
web-based implies cross-platform unless you are coding really badly.
Anyway Flex may be a way to go, or you could go pure Java, or you could
use something else cross-platform I suppose but currently it sounds like
you’re on your way. Do what works best for you. Having different levels
of access makes me want to try something web-based, but that’s just
because my experience with DBs is in that area I imagine.
Good luck.
