my wireless is not working...

hi everyone,

my laptop just made me crazy…

hwinfo --wlan --short
network:
wlan0 Atheros AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter

it tells me the hardware called “AR5001”, then i search the google, it should be supported…

but “enable wlan” can’t be checked,it is just below the “enable networking”

then i type “ifconfig -a” can get:

wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 5C:AC:4C:A4:7C:17
          BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

and “/usr/sbin/iwlist scan”:

This device works out of the box

Tell us what version of openSUSE you have and if kde or gnome

Lets see this just to be sure

Is OK

But lets give it a nudge:

su -
modprobe -rv ath5k
modprobe -v ath5k

worth a reboot

Make sure you let kwallet manage the secrets

Oh…I followed your advice but it still can’t work…

linux-5yfj:/home/thelover_z # modprobe -rv ath5k

and i still get this…everything seems ok, but it just can’t work…

Make sure in

Yast > Network devices > Network Settings
You are using network manager to manage connections

You can see it here
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10573557/lw-wireless-cofig.mpeg

and i noticed if i run “modprobe -rv ath5k” “modprobe -v ath5k”

/usr/sbin/iwlist scan
lo Interface doesn't support scanning.

eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

so i have to type “ifconfig wlan0 up” then i can get:

I’m sure i’m using network manager…
i’ll watch that right now…downloading…

i have watched that video…everything is ok here…
but I can’t find any wifi…[enable wireless] is not checked and i can’t check it…

Create a new user login and try with that
Tell me what happens

You could also try adding this repo
Index of /repositories/driver:/wireless/11.4-update

Update from it and see if that helps

@TheLover_Z:

Please use yast or zypper and install the package rfkill

Then do:

rfkill list

and report what you get.

I have created a new user…but i got the same question…
…i just googled but i still don’t know how to use that .repo file…= =

In your normal account do

su -
rfkill unblock all

You still have a soft block
Keep trying rfkill and reboot, I have had a block that was a real pain to shift.

i got the same result…

Do you any other OS like windows installed
Does it work there?
Or a SUSE live CD,does that work?

windows7, ok
ubuntu,used wicd (not NetworkManager), ok…

I just don’t understand…why i can see it in “/usr/sbin/iwlist scan” but i just can’t connect it?

Switch the wireless off on the case
Shutdown.
Pull the battery and leave a few minutes
Boot up and try again
