my openSuSE 11.2 experiance

I have been using linux for about 2 years now, I started with openSuSE 10.3 and switched to 11.0 when it was released, never looked back, love KDE 3.5, skipped 11.1 and have had it as my primary OS for all that time.

So with the release of 11.2 I figured lets give it a try, but not to hose my 11.0 install I gotten a new hdd for 11.2, made lots of screen shots and notes about settings and stuff of my 11.0 install while the 1.2 DVD was downloading and burning, this is my experience:

Installation

There is very little to say about this, it went very smooth, I had to adjust a bit of the partitioning as it wanted to use the swap of the 11.0 install and I wanted both installs to use their own hdd, so I got to use the partition tool and have to say it was very smooth. I selected KDE 4, although I love KDE 3 I figured now is the time to move on rather then upgrading from 3 to 4 at a later date.

I also liked how it patched and during that offered to install the MS fonts with the little note about how it could not be distributed with the DVD.

My HP all-in-one got detected and installed and as I found out later, worked straight away including scanning.

All in all this went very smooth and fast, I was impressed.

Booting

I always boot without splash screen as I like to see what is happening, so right after selecting to boot 11.2 I hit escape and first thing I saw was “Module ata_piix not found” and I thought oh dear, but it kept booting so I guess its a module I don’t need or have but is listed as something to load at startup, I later found Bug 541519.

Speed of the booting is amazing compared to 11.0, I read on many web pages about this and how ext4 made it all faster but I think this is more then just because of a new filesystem, very impressive.

KDE 4

Since I came from KDE 3 I have to say KDE 4 was a little bit of shock, but once I got my desktop to folder view I felt more at home, missed little things like the trash bin, but found out later I can add those as a widget, only issue there is that when I add files to my desktop they will slide under such a widget.

I miss the list of most used programs, I think last used is now at the top of the KDE menu and then there is favorites which puzzles me at times, I am sure the last days Yast been my favorite and sometimes its there and sometimes its not

I also noticed lots of sub-menu items in the KDE menu don’t show up, for example Akregator is installed and shows up in the menu editor under Internet > RSS but in the menu itself it’s not there. Very strange.

Dolphin needs a lot of getting used to, but I will get used to it all given some more time.

Repositories

One of the first things I did was add all the needed repositories like packman, nvidia, security and Wine. A few which where listed with 11.0 under the community section like Nvidia where no longer there so I had to add those manually from the info I had of my 11.0 install.

I did notice there was no update repository listed and I vaguely remember from 11.0 I had to register at 1st startup, so in Yast I found the registration option and did that, this somehow landed me a a loop where it would keep opening a browser window where I had to click continue which would close it and it would be re-opened again by the registration window. Eventually I got out of it thinking I did not register but the update repository was added.

This could have gone smoother and maybe 1st thing you see when you log in the first time ?

Multimedia

What puzzles me here is that you had such a nice solution with the MS fonts, why not do the same with the multimedia stuff, instead I had to follow Restricted Formats/11.2 - openSUSE-Community to get all I wanted, I know its not a lot of work but I do wonder if someone new to openSuSE will know about or find this wiki.

My suggestion for the future is do the same as with a MS fonts, give the option at install/update time.

I was really happy to see that ALSA still is the primary sound system, I do use several Windows programs under wine and ALSA is the way to go with Wine.

Yast2 Software Management

Besides the new look compared to 11.0 I noticed 2 things:

When selecting a repository you get the line at the top “switch system package to the versions in this repository” I think I understand what it means and does but I dare not click it in case I mess up big time but its so visible I am sure in the future I will click it by accident, so am not sure if it should be there.

But the biggest irritation of all would be the fact the after each new run of adding packages the silly thing closes when its done, 11.0 would ask if I wanted to add more or not. When installing a new system you add / remove package a lot and having to restart it each time is a pain, sorry but in my eyes this is not a good change.

Packman

One of the packages I use is Mediatomb from the packman repository, it however was not there yet, I am sure it will appear there in the future but for now I switched to the 11.1 repository and installed it from there. I think its understandable that 1-2 days after a new release not all repositories are 100% up to date.

Thunderbird

I use Thunderbird for my mail and I have to say I was far from pleased that the openSuSE repositories only came with version 3b and not 2. Several of my plug-ins did not even work with 3b and it did take me a while to find version 2, I had to add the Mozilla repository.

I don’t think a beta release of a program like this should be the only one in the main repository, 2.0 should have been there.

ip6, Opera, Mailwasher

This may sound silly but Opera would be a show stopper for me, I simply love the browser, I have no issues with Firefox but after using Opera for so many years… its me

Next to that I still use mailwasher, the few left overs from my windows days and it works great under Wine.

However under 11.2 I noticed that mailwasher needed about 30-40 seconds to log into a mail account compared to 1 seconds under 11.0 and Opera would lock up sing 100% cpu on almost every other page.

I searched these forums and found a possible solution in disabling ip6, I went for the ipv6.disable=1 in the boot parameter and this fully solved the mailwasher issue. It partially solved the Opera issue, instead of every other page it now was just 1 in 10.

For Opera I eventually removed the QT4 version which was installed via the opensuse repository and manually installed the QT3 version from their website, it runs fine now except for QT3 dialogs/menu. Added a bug report at Opera as there clearly is an QT4 issue.

Conclusion

I doubt I will be booting into 11.0 much more, I am very pleased with the whole experience and would like to say Kudos to all who where involved.

Well there was reasoning with why thunderbird 3 came in the default repos, as soon thunderbird 2 will end its lifespan… we are not that far from thunderbird 3.
As for nvidia, I have to say i do with that the drivers were released side by side with 11.2 but I do understand why it was done as the drivers are proprietary.
