My IDE hard disk not detected by LiveCD

Hello all. First time poster, so I’ll try not to screw up too badly. =)

Anyhow, I’m using the LiveDVD of openSUSE 11.0, and as the title says, my plain ol’ IDE hard disk is not being detected by install. lspci, however, confirms that my IDE controller is being detected, and my optical drive and ZIP drive are fine, as well. I have no SATA devices in my system, although my mainboard (Asus P4S800D-X) has an onboard SiS SATA controller which is disabled in the BIOS.

If anyone has any helpful advice to impart, please do so. This problem is beginning to drive me batty. =)

  • PizzaOfHut,

jumpers on the drive set correctly? I also recall an issue where “Cable select” didn’t work and it worked when I set the drive to “Master”.

That board has a SiS chipset. The kernel module needed for IDE is sis5513. In the terminal window as root do:

lsmod | grep sis

If lsmod does not report back sis5513 then it is not loaded and that is the problem. If so, try this:

modprobe sis5513

Then try the installation.

Ok, I figured out what the problem was. My HD was, in fact, jumpered incorrectly. I am posting this reply from my brand new openSUSE 11.0 installation. Rejumpering the disk to Cable Select did the trick. And to boot, my hard disk activity light on the front of my case, which had been non functional ever since I put in my Asus mobo over 2 years ago is working impeccably for the first time since then. My sincerest thanks to you both.
