My Desktop GUI will not start, Please help me.

I was messing around with a few software install packages when I stumbled on a nvidia package for Geforce. I installed it and then later decided I didn’t need it. I uninstalled it and when I booted my computer up some time later, my desktop would not load. Only in fail safe boot option do I get a desktop. Other wise It goes to command shell.

I tried startx

I wrote that whole report from my linux computer.

Tried sax2 -r -m 0=vesa

I dont know how to use the rescue disk and if I do have to do that then I’ll need to to do it over a nework, please keep that in mind if offering that suggestion. I’m new to linux, so please help me resolve this thank you.

When I type sax2 it sais “If ‘sax2’ is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this cnf sax2”

There is no sax2 on opensuse 11.3. Try to remove the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (if you have one) and reboot.

It worked. I went into terminal and removed it during failsafe.

Thank you elksi.

What was the problem? What did I do wrong?

You have installed a binary driver from nvidia and after removing it you haven’t removed the xorg.conf file that it has been created during installation. Open source drivers (like the nouveau driver that you have now) don’t require a xorg.conf file and the old one had wrong settings.

I need to be more careful with the packages I install in the future. If it didn’t remove a configuration file set for it after removal then as far as I’m concerned its a faulty package that needs work.

No it is not a faulty package. It is a binary driver packaged by nvidia devs not the opensuse people. So they do what they do for their closed source driver to work. They can’t remove conf files because you have the option to alter them to suit your needs. If they do so they will become dangerous.

I see. Ok thank you for your help. I’m trying to learn as much as I can about Linux.

You made a clever decision to try with opensuse. It has a lot to give and it is not as “i want to be mac” as ubuntu. Just read before you do and ask if you don’t understand something.

Welcome!!!
