Mutt for reading internal messages now only shows zypp msgs, no kernel, systemd now shown

I have been using mutt to read internal system error messages for a long time. it used to read kernel, pam-unix, postfix, smartd, systemd, zypp messages.

After about 7/23/2026 mutt now only shows zypp info; not the others. I don’t know where the “read list” is for mutt. I made no intentional changes to try to change anything but mutt behaves differently.

Any configuration insights that I might have inadvertently changed would be appreciated.

thanks, tom kosvic

Can you try:

less /var/mail/$USER

What does that show?

less /var/mail/$USER shows all the info I used to get. An excerpt down to kernel messages is shown below. Can I get this back into where it gets found by mutt or should I just substitute the command you gave me in place of mutt.

thanks

I did notice that the date of the output is for Jul 15 not Jul 30 (today).
At that time period mutt was giving the full output.

I am thinking now that the problem is that the info has stopped getting sent to the mail file for some reason and that the problem is not mutt configuration for reading the data.

tom kosvic

Mutt can only provide output, based on the information that is fed into it … so highly doubtful (to me) this is a Mutt issue.

I have found that the command below gives all info I used to get from mutt and data looks current and accurate. I will just use this instead of mutt.

thanks.

You have old files in your logwatch tmpdir (/var/cache/logwatch):
        logwatch.VS8MzIwf
        logwatch.Rc_s7_Mj
The directories listed above were most likely created by a
logwatch run that failed to complete successfully. If so, you
may delete these directories.

Note, I can display this logwatch summary and read it fully using:

sudo logwatch --detail Low --range today

But when I open this logwatch file in mutt, I still see only the zypp information. I would have to conclude that mutt reading of the logwatch file has become corrupted. But I do have a work around.

thanks, tom kosvic
