If you want to install openSUSE on the same hard disk with Windows 7, you need to reduce the size of the Windows partition. First in Windows, uninstall (not just delete) any Windows programs you do not need and never just delete them, but use the uninstall Windows function. If you don’t know what the program does, then do not uninstall it. Next, go to the main disk in Windows Explorer, pick properties, Tools Tab and select the Disk Cleanup function. Remove only those items already selected, do not add anything else. Once Done, go to the Tools Tab and elect to defragment your hard disk and allow it to complete. Reboot your computer and restart Windows. Next, go into the Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, On the Left Pick Disk Management and on the right select the main (large) C:: drive partition. Right Click your mouse and select shrink. If you can get 20 - 40 GB in shrinkage, then you can install openSUSE. You can pick more, but you must leave at least 10 % of the total disk size free so that Windows will run. If for any reason, you can not get enough room to load openSUSE, you can use openSUSE to shrink the Windows partition, but you would still go through the first recommended steps to (hopefully) increase the area you can get to install openSUSE in to.
software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 11.3
Next You need to make a bootable openSUSE disk. If you can make a DVD, then download the DVD and create a DVD boot disk. If you can only make a CD, then download one of the Live CD’s for GNOME or KDE. Then, boot from the disk you make, allow openSUSE to install onto your Windows hard drive and accept the defaults it provides you. Always back up any important data you can not afford to lose as you never know for sure that there is not some disk problem on your computer. For instance, I just had to replace the main hard drive on my two year old Dell Laptop. Good luck and ask any other questions that you like.
Thank You,
+1
Always use Windows Disk Manager to resize ntfs paritions before installing Linux! There is no advantage of doing that with PartedMagic or Linux setups … just some more risks of damaging the filesystem. We don’t like to play with ntfs … even though we know how to.
