Multimedia issues

Hi,

After being tired of all the windows problems (crashes, viruses…) I’ve decided to make a dualboot windows XP and OpenSuSE 11.1. At first sight, it worked fine and stable, but now I’m noticing some issues.

When playing some multimedia like movies or music, I get the following probls:

When playing a movie with kaffeine(dvd or divx), it often hangs when I pressed pause and trying to resume it.

With mplayer, I always get some errors when trying to open a file (will post some screens later on), but he seems to be able to open it. But when trying to go to another chapter with a dvd, he always crashes.

With atunes, when maximizing the window by clicking on the Atunes symbol in the right down bar, I often only get a blank window and cannot do anything with it, only solution is to restart the whole program.

Also, Amorak often hangs when doing a heavy duty job.

And last, I also often get a message that my sound card isn’t working anymore, and that he has swithched to another device (then the music is also noisy).

So, guess that there’s something wrong with my installation? I installed all the necessary libraries with the 1-click opensuse install from the packman-site. Don’t know if it has anything to do with it, but I’ve also installed wine.

Other programs I’ve installed on my own: Xine, Mplayer (+GMplayer).

Is there anything I can do about this? Or should a reinstall be better?

Anyway, thanks for reading this and for your (hopefully ) helpful answers.

did you try the multimedia on this 1 click site if not give it a try it is what i always use

When I do this, I get the following message:

I’ve chosen the first and the second options, but both times he returns to the yast2 main screen. So seems that there are some faults in my libraries.
Does anyone know how to solve this (guess de-install everything and reinstall the right ones?)

ps: I’ve translated this log on my own, so this won’t be exactly as the native english linux

What are your libraries? What openSUSE version are you using? That may make a difference. If using 11.0 or 11.1, what is the output of:
zypper lr
Please post the output here.

output is:

(ja=yes and nee=no :-))

I’m using opensuse 11.1. Sory for forgetting to mention this. But I’m quite new to linux so I have to find my way through it.

thx for the help

(ps i’ve tried the previous post, but I don’t understand how to install the seperate libraries, what do I have to download when clicking on the seperate files (oss non-oss …))

I highighted in red the “Ja” in the repos you should disable (libdvdcss and videolan). They are causing you problems. I also think you can disable “openSUSE-11.1-0” as I believe that is for your installation CD/DVD. You can get your apps off the web instead. I also think you only need ONE “update” and not two.

If it is currently “nee”, then leave it “nee”.

Make those changes, and try again your app installations.

I’m afraid you’re going to fast for me. I’m not a noob, but I’m quite new to linux ;).
So, I should disable the highlighted repos, how do I do this(guess it has to be done in yast2?)? And when this is done, to install the apps, can i do this in yast too?

Sry for the annoyances, but for an experienced windows user, Linux requires some time to adapt to.

thx for the reply!

You edit the repo’s in the Yast - Software - Software repositories

You need to change them as shown, actually 10. is a duplicate so you could delete it.

Then follow the guide we gave you earlier.

I’ve done what you’ve said (actually, wasn’t that difficult :-)) and it seems to work better. Atunes doesn’t hang up anymore, have to check for kaffeine and amarok.
Tough, with mplayer i still got errors:

  1. When opening a dvd
    warning MVs not available

  2. When going to next chapter
Mplayer interupted by signal 11 in module: demux_open

  3. when precing ok
Mplayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM
recompile player with --enable-debug and make a ‘gdb’ backtrace and dissambly.
    Details in docs/html/en/bugreports_what.html#bugreports crash

and then a box with bug report.

But when doing the same with the SMplayer, it worked fine for me.

So guess I’ll wait and see how things are going.

Another question, when playing music with atunes, it seems that I can’t play any sound with other program, or youtube… (still have to figure out because fi kopete does make some sounds sometimes, so isn’t for everything)

thx anyway for the great support!

Something to check is the priority of the repo’s.

Set the oss, non-oss to 120
all the others to 99

Update all unconditionally in Packman

From the apps you mention I only use SMPlayer, Amarok 2

Seems that atunes still hangs from time to time. Other things like Kaffeine seem to work flawlessly.
Maybe it’s some kind of bug of atunes?

Anyway, I also have another question (related to the sound card).
With the sound mixer, if I scroll the slider of pcm, there doesn’t happen anything. Only when i go to the mixer options and scroll the slider of front sound I can control the volume. Is this normal?
It’s kinda uncomfortable because now I can’t use the keyboard keys to control the sound.
Anyone got a clue?

inside the mixer full view is an option for configuration, allows for selectable hot keys(in kde kmix anyway) great for testing to find the keys you want and what you want them to do. once thats set adjust the values inside the config file saved and the changes will stay in effect even once the system is restarted. its not too bad once the systems set up and running through the mixer, i had a similar issue only the opposite keys were bound to the front volume but the sound was being controlled by the PCM.

hope that helps^_^

Might be worth starting a new thread on this. I don’t use atunes. Just amarok. And my volume I adjust with the mouse scroll wheel usually. Just hover the pointer over the speaker and scroll up/down. The same can be done with the amarok icon in the panel.
