Hello all… I just installed 11.0 last night and so far I love it. I am however having the hardest time getting multimedia to work as it did in other distros. I’ve made the switch to openSuse recently for many reasons and since I am here, I’d like to get everything working.
Here’s what I’ve tried. First I started with a clean install of 11.0. Then updated. I went to this forum and found a similar discussion and it had a link to install proprietary codecs (openSuse site). It worked so to speak. I really like Exaile but when I installed it, things broke even more.
What I want is to be able to play mp3’s with Exaile (or a similar program), DVD’s, mpeg’s, flash, etc. I also want to be able to do this in Firefox which is where I am having the most of my problems. I checked to see if the plugin’s where installed (in Firefox) and they are but mpeg’s just flash for a second. I have audio though. If anyone has good way to get all this working I would be very grateful.
Well, I was trying to use mplayer and the plugin’s are installed. But now, it is broken. Should I start over with a fresh install and try your suggestion(s)? Also, as I mentioned, I really like Exaile but the last time I installed it, it broke playback in Firefox.
Would you like to tell me if you are using kde or gnome. So you have already installed mplayer and the w32codecs ?
For exaile: Have you installed the gstreamer plugins from packman yet ? You need at least gstreamer-fluendo-mp3 to have mp3 playback with gstreamer. Exaile seems to use gstreamer for playback…
I’ve never had stability problems with mplayer. Just the contrary. For me its more stable than any other multimedia app.
Hey its your PC. How can you speak of stability when you can’t even get exaile running with firefox? Sorry, nothing personal, but it really baffles me.
I have mplayer and firefox working. Good luck with your exaile efforts, but IMHO mplayer and mplayerplug-in is the best way to go.
and went to the same site from my wife’s winXP PC. Needless to say, mplayerplug-in faired better than what my wife currently can play with her winXP. (she clearly has to do some winXP updates).

Watch what you are talking about. I am not the one with the probs. My linux installations have run fine for a long time…
I just wanted to point out that not everyone want mplayer.
And you did not take care or prowell’s exaile prob.
You are correct, I did misinterpret your post. Apologies. Very glad to read this is working well for you. …
The massive volume of this new merged forum is starting to fatigue me. I think I might take a break from it for a while (once I catch up with my over due replies).
The only issue that matters is to help the new users to become familiar with opensuse and convince them to stay with suse or linux. I know many friends that tried linux one time and got that frustrated that they never touched it again.
i coudn’t play mp3’s in exaile either. then i went to edit->preferences->advanced->playback sink
-it was set to (use gconf settings by defaults). i changed that to “auto” and it started playing all media.
hope this helps!
