Hello. For the last few weeks, the download speeds for Amarok and other multi-media packages have about 13k per sec. It took about four hours to do 536 megs of updates on a cable connection!
Can someone tell me if’s the servers or my machine is causing the problem? If I uninstall the multimedia package, the download speeds go back to normal.

You could try checking other mirrors. A good first idea, though, would be to check and redefine your list of DNS servers.
Best bet is to use Gibson Research’s DNS Benchmark, use it to get a list of better DNS servers. It runs under Wine, and choosing wisely from the list of good servers can make quite a difference.
are you using amarok from packman?
it could be your mirror
what’s your current packman mirror, post
zypper lr -d
you can pick a new mirror here http://packman.links2linux.org/mirrors
personally I’ve found gwdg.de to be the fastest mirror, it is in Germany but it services two big organizations and is well maintained.
I really don’t think it’s the dns, as most dns queries use a cache, even a bad dns would not result in slow download speeds
Yes, the gwdg packman is usually the best one for me. However, I found that when it gave errors, the problem was the DNS, changing the DNS in the router bounced me to a better mirror. Note that changing the repository server from gwdg to another did not make a difference, but changing the DNS list in my router and in openSUSE did. When you have the gwdg.de repository, as with the others, you get redirected to a mirror “near” you. If your chosen DNServer – or sometimes the auto-DNS – points to a down or slow mirror, you can have problems.
that would depend on your isp or what dns you use
my isp has a quick dns and I’ve never used 3rd party dns, I’d feel strange about that sending an unknown party (google) my dns queries
as packman’s mirrors are different from opensuse’s I use a local opensuse mirror and gwdg for packman I had no real issues (I’m nowhere near Germany but I am on the continent)
FYI, I’m using different OS’s and locations for downloading:
cable vs sat TV broadband.
opensuse 42.1 vs windows 10
This seems to cross over all. Windows 10 has the same stall issues as opensuse when downloading updates. When I install linux using opensuse leap 42.1 I don’t come across these issues more than one or twice. Very fast downloads.
I would have replied sooner, but I have I very limited access to my computer at present. I’ll check out the dns program next chance I get.
