Is there any program in Linux that can replace MS Publisher? It’s the only thing keeping my parents from using SUSE.

Good luck.

It’s for making different types of documents. Stuff like newsletters, brochures, business cards, letterhead and labels. I’ve only used it a couple of times so I don’t know everything it can do.

After read wikipedia I see:
“Microsoft Publisher, officially Microsoft Office Publisher, is a
desktop publishing application from Microsoft. It is an entry-level
application, differing from Microsoft Word in that the emphasis is
placed on page layout and design rather than text composition and
proofing. The current version is Microsoft Office Publisher 2010 for
Windows (no version exists for the Macintosh), released on June 15, 2010.”
so I believe you can use Scribus to do the same and more…

I know some people use scribus for DTP. It is available in the repositories
… A description can be found here
http://www.scribus.net/
It is of course not exactly the same (it is not a publisher clone) so they
will have to learn something new.
Scribus looks like it should do the trick.
Thanks for the help.

I tried Scribus for our secretary to use - didn’t go over real well.
Biggest gripe she had was lack of transportability of her prior Pub work.
So far I haven’t found anyway to read in the MS file format so I set her up
a VM with XP just to run Publisher ;-(
Kindly post back if you make any progress - I’d love to banish that last Win
app from the office.

just wondering:
is OpenOffice something (Writer/Impress/?) able to read MS Publisher
formats?

I know OpenOffice Writer can do some of the same things I’ve used Publisher for, business cards and labels, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it could open files from Publisher.

No it can’t open that files. The only thing I ever found was a link to an
online conversion service here
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=13121
Though I never tried that.
OpenOffice does not have anything “equivalent” or is compatible with MS Publisher directly. Desktop Publishing software is very incompatible even between proprietary programs, and Publisher being the smallest and most consumer-orientated is probably the least portable.
You can try, if you still have access to Publisher, try saving it as Word but I haven’t had much luck in that. Publisher remains one of my thorns-in-my-side.
Scribus is a DTP software, but it does not include a lot of the ease and drag-and-drop that Publisher provides. There is a learning curve between Publisher and Scribus and depending on how it is being used, may not be worth it.
There is a site that can upload Publisher files, and it converts it into a PDF. While this isn’t ideal, it at least lets you view/print your existing documents. I’ll have to see if I can dig up the site. Microsoft’s Office 2010 Online does not include Publisher and probably will not for a long time.
For Publisher-like functionallity you can look at Scribus, see what OpenOffice Writer can do as well as KOffice’s KWord. This last one looks to be pretty capable, with the textboxes and image handling. Please note, I say this without a lot of hands-on experience with it.
Unfortunately, though, there are not many programs that can open and handle .pub files and there is likely no real push for it either. On the good side, though, word processing programs are getting better and better with DTP-like capabilities (tempates, columns, image handling, etc.)
Hi
It should run under wine ok?
I’m using crossover office pro here with office 2003;

Yes, I totally forgot about Wine.
I’ve had mixed results with Wine, and prefer running thing natively so I usually don’t immediately think about Wine. Publisher (2000) was the one I couldn’t get working, while Photoshop I could (but I have Gimp as an alternative). I also didn’t kill myself trying to get it working either.
Hi
Well I’m using the free version of crossover they gave away in 2008
along with free support for a year I use it for Garmin Mapsource,
Uniden scanner software and my 2003 version of MS Office Pro (which
isn’t used at all LOL).
At least with Uniden they do publish their communications protocol so I
should really write some software to use it in linux…

May be tryinig to install publisher under wine.
Yeah, I have one too.
You might want to have a look at Pagestream,
PageStream - Professional DTP for Amiga, Linux, Macintosh & Windows
I find Scibus’ text editing clunky.
I seem to remember looking at this before. It looks a little old. I mean, look at the Macintosh OS 9 like menus!
The current version is 5 and PageStream5 released in 2005. Heck, it became available for Linux in 2004 and I think a LOT has changed since then.
