Hi All,
Brand new to Linux and finding theres more work involved than Windows but hopefully more reliability too!
I’m trying to install Mplayer and assoc codecs to get my movies, etc up and running but have not a clue how to install them.
Could some kind person walk me through the process?

To install mplayer and codecs:
in yast-> software repositories, add ‘community repositories’, then
select ‘Packman’. (you may select others, there are many, worth hours of
exploration)
Finish/Accept… then go to yast-> software manager
search for mplayer, select it
search for w32codec, select it
click ‘Accept’, watch as mplayer is installed (yaay!)
before trying to play a video, right click on a video, choose ‘open with…’,
choose ‘Other’, select ‘Multimedia’, then ‘Video player’, then ‘Mplayer’.
select ‘remember this’, then ‘apply’ or ‘ok’ (I forget!)
bask in the glow from your newly installed mplayer happily playing your video.
If you don’t do the ‘open with…’ routine, the video will be opened with
kaffeine, or xine, or something else equally icky. mplayer with w32codecs
will play just about everything.

Tried to install the mplayer best I could with your instructions and think I rolled a blank or have a mistake. After you install it where do you find the mplayer? This sounds really stupid but this is my first attempt at Suse moving from windows, ahhh. Thanks. Oh went and found it in software managment and clicked to install it and it asked for the suse disk is that part of this?? Well put in the suse disk as asked. OK now put in the movie and it trys to automatically play from Totem and when click to open with it only has open with “totem”, does not give other options.

It can be. Depends on some factors, but not a huge deal. Insert the suse
disk in the drive, let it do it’s thing.

gosh, I think the intent was for chasemon42 to install mplayer from the pacman repositories; i wonder if the asking for a disk was the install asking for the opensuse DVD, that would have another version of mplayer installed; the opinion on this forum seems to be to preferentially use the pacman source; I guess in YaST one could suggest disabling the DVD source, and just opt for pacman?
I think folks comment that smplayer is a frontend for mplayer if folks want it; if one opens the video as lornix recommends, by right-clicking on the file, the front end may not be needed?

The right-click is only done ONCE, for each new filetype you discover you want
to play with mplayer. It only sets the association for that filetype to
mplayer. Usually, they’re set to Kaffiene or Xine or something. After
you’ve set the association, left clicking as usual will open the file and
begin playing with the gmplayer front end. I haven’t tried the smplayer
front end, personally didn’t see the need, as I usually adjust the
associations to open the files with ‘mplayer’, which has NO other onscreen
presence. Learn the keys, you can control the video much easier. It’s even
possible to set the window decoration config to present the mplayer video
window without borders or frame (you move it with ALT-drag)
And chasemon42 likely hasn’t removed the dvd repo from his repo list. It was
easier to just have him install the dvd, let it read it, and go on. No,
mplayer is only found on packman, there is no other source that I’m aware
of… and really aren’t interested in any other… Packman has an amazing
breadth of software, games (warzone2100!!), utilities (nasm203) and goodies
(uh, darn, nothing comes to mind!)
Hi chasemon42, when you get some other repositories added to your list, either
remove or disable the DVD source, as you won’t need it again unless you need
to reinstall or something like that.

The easiest way for a new OpenSuse user is to use “one-click” installs.
See the link below, and click on Multimedia. On the “advanced” tab, you can select M-Player as well. This will install all the codecs you are asking for
