MP3 file handling in Firefox & Chromium on OpenSUSE 12.2

Hi, I have a need to make Firefox open MP3 files in a custom application (sort of a wrapper for VLC) from Firefox.
This worked fine in 11.4, but now I’m trying to do the same in 12.2 (currently Firefox 17.0) and no matter what I try, MP3 files always open inside Firefox using some unknown player. Chromium uses the same player too.
In firefox, I’ve set Preferences, Applications, MP3 audio to Save File or Always ask or VLC but it never makes any difference.
I don’t have the VLC plugin installed.
I went to about:config & made sure that plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types has audio/mpeg listed (also tried removing it just in case !).
I tried removing all media players I could find (Totem, Mplayer) but that made no diffrerence.
Give that Chromium uses the same player, I’m wondering if the browsers are using HTML5 to play the MP3s natively? (but the web page is not HTML5 and even going to file:///home/<myhomedir>/Music and clicking an mp3 file does the same thing.
Setting wav files to Save File or Always Ask or /usr/bin/vlc etc works as expected, so MP3 files are being handled differently.

Just hoping someone might have some idea what is going on?

Thanks,
Ian

Right click a .mp3 in your file system > properties
Now click the small spanner
Select your preferred application for opening and move it to the top of the list and Apply

Does that help

You mean in a file manager? No, unfortunately that makes no difference at all.
Incidentally, it doesn’t seem to matter what desktop you use - the computer I’m trying to do this on is running LXDE, but the same happens on other machines that are using KDE & Gnome.

I have the same problem.
I set Clementine as my default mp3 application (both in Firefox and in the system settings).
But the MP3 files always open inside Firefox, using some sort of unknown player.
As usually, I followed caf instructions to install the multimedia players (plus adding Clementine).
I had no issues with 12.1 … :\

You guys are opening some kind of .mp3 that you are accessing in Firefox? Can you give me an example?
It’s just that I don’t really know exactly what it is you are working with…

Not sure about chromium, but firefox 17.0.1 can use any program to run mp3.
Got mine set to smplayer2 and it works without any additional plugins.
Just set your preferences, it’ll work:

When I open an mp3 file in the file manager, it’s opened by Clementine.
If I open an mp3 file within Firefox, it opens in a strange player embedded in Firefox itself.
Here is an example of an mp3 file which I open with Firefox:

I had already set Firefox preferences the way suggested by finders.
I suspected some Firefox plugins, but (apart from the fact that I didn’t install other plugins besides those suggested in the forum) I tried to disable those with no avail …

Could be gecko-mediaplayer or xine-browser-plugin that you have installed, I think these may overwrite your settings.
They should be listed on the plugins list if you have them.

Same
It’s not something I ever do and given a choice I will usually download the file to play from the HD
