Moving from 12.3 to 13.x

Hi

Not long ago I decided to move from 12.2 to 12.3. The only repos I had active were

1 | repo-non-oss | openSUSE-12.2-Non-Oss
12 | repo-oss | openSUSE-12.2-Oss
14 | repo-update | openSUSE-12.2-Update
15 | repo-update-non-oss | openSUSE-12.2-Update-Non-Oss

So in Yast I just edited the names and URLs to replace every instance of “12.2” with “12.3”.

I then used a terminal to do “zypper dup”. This all worked fine.

My question is, can I do the same to move from 12.3 to 13.x? I can’t see any reason why not, but thought I’d check first.

Thanks

Fred

Only when you go to 13.1. Which is the only 13.x version until now btw.

Of course you can.

Notice that in openSUSE there are no major.minor version numbering,
despite the appearances. The difference between 12.2 and 12.3 is as
large as between 12.3 and 13.1. All are major releases.

Great! Thanks both; I’ll give it a try over the weekend.

Remember backups.

Point taken!

Although all my /home data is on a separate partition so I guess the risk is reduced?

Not really, if MBR blows out.

Best always do a full HD backup, first. If you can, test the restore to a spare HD, just to be sure.

A bit.

A fresh install can be told not to format “/home”, and an upgrade
doesn’t touch “/home”, be it a separate partition or not. So it should
be reasonable safe.

But! Bad things do happen.
