Moving from 10.1.x32 (desktop) to 11.1.x64 (laptop)

Hello my friends,

I bought a laptop computer (Dell E6500) and I am trying to configure my new OpenSuse 11.1 installation (x64).

I am moving from a desktop computer with OpenSuse 10.1 (x32) and KDE 3. I wish to stay with KDE 3 rather than moving to the KDE 4.

My question is: how can I save myself valuable time by transfering (safely and without crashes) some of my old system configurations to the new system? Given that the new computer has very different hardware (e.g. monitor) I think that there are only few things that I could safely carry along. Any suggestions welcome.

Also, would it make any sense to install again the x32 version? Are there any prons and cons between the x64 and x32 installations?

Thank you for your time

In short NO.
Look at saving your user data from /home
But I wouldn’t even keep any of the desktop config from the hidden /home/username
except maybe your Firefox profile and email client data

_64 is just fine these days
But to be honest, most average users would never notice the difference.
I have a _64 bit box but use 32, simply because one or two things are a little less trouble (Flash, Java) and I don’t do masses of video encoding, if I did _64 would speed things up.

That helps, thank you for the response.

I also wonder * whether solving issues/problems related to sound and internet card may be easier or more likely possible if using the x32 version of the OpenSuse 11.1.

Has anybody installed succesfully (with sound and wireless - Intel 5100) the 11.1 OpenSuse on a Dell E6500? Any advise?

Thanks for reading :)*

I doubt it will matter. But if it were me I would use 32, because I really don’t need _64 boost. And I’ll sleep at night even though I’m not making the most of the power available to me.

Though considering it would take me less than an hour to try one install, I’d be prepared to try them both and then decide.

I went for the x32 version.

My problems related to sound and network remain, but I will make another more specific post for getting some help on those.

Thanks very much

You are welcome. Good luck.

Typically many Intel wireless “just work”. Ensure one has the proper SSID, encryption, and pass phrase setup.

Sound should also work. Be certain to double check your mixer settings (both master and PCM volume up). Take a look at the sound troubleshooting guide. Often older hardware needs alsa-firmware installed: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE

In both cases (wireless and sound) you are best off starting new threads. In the case of wireless, before starting the new thread, take a look at the thre stickies at the stop of the wireless subforum area: Wireless - openSUSE Forums … there is guidance in there to help you setup your wireless, and also guidance advising you what information to post so that others can help you.

Good luck.
