Moving files with Dolphin

How do you select and move photos or files in Dolphin file manager without them opening in preview? Every time I try to select files to move or copy they want to open up, so I can’t move them. I used Dolphin a couple years ago and don’t remember having these problems.

That indeed has changed. If you hover your mouse over an icon, you’ll see a **+**sign, single-click it, and the file is selected for operations like copying etc. As soon as a file is added to selection, the + will become a **-, **click that to deselect. Also you can use the mouse and select an area in the filemanager window. Everything within that area will be added to selection.

Thank you. Can you also open a second Dolphin window to make moving and copying files easier? Wasn’t able to do that either.

You can also use [Ctrl] + left mouse click for selection

Wow - I’d never paid any attention to that + before. Probably never
even noticed it. Thanks for the tip…

Using the dolphing search mechanism you can even select (for example) all PDF files in a folder and it’s subfolders and copy them all at once to a third folder.

Another nice feature of dolphin - you can hit F4 and open a mini terminal window (attached to that instance of dolphin) that is set to the same folder as you have opened in dolphin. Then you can use command line features to copy and move things real fast to other folders. For example I had several duplicate picture files with the same filename as their predecessors, except the suffix “_1” in a folder that I wanted to move to another folder. I just hit F4, and then at the prompt typed the command mv *_1.JPG /home/george/Pictures/newfolder/, and all 25 or so pics moved all at once to the new folder without having to take the time to select each one individually.

Then you just hit F4 again to close the mini terminal window.

That doesn’t work well.

Instead, click the Split button to open a new pane, then you can DragNDrop.

Thank you
