I am thinking of getting a refurbed Dell 7010. It does have UEFI.
I have a working 42.2 install. / on one HD and /home on another. This machine came with Vista and no UEFI. Vista is gone.
I want to remove the W10 HD and move the 42.2 HDs over.
Can this be easily done?
Might it be easier to just partition the W10 Drive and put the / partition there and just move my /home HD over? I’ve never worked with UEFI.
Any hints/suggestions appreciated.
UEFI is not the entire problem you also have different hardware and may need to run mkinitd to have the OS configure its self. Also there may be video issues I doubt the new machine has the same GPU. Best to uninstall any drivers that you may have installed
Also just putting an EFI drive in won’t announces it as bootable to the BIOS((now known as UEFI). Though you maybe able to select from the UEFI bootmenu. Dual boot through grub will not work right away you will need to tell grub to scan for foreign OS in Yast boot settings. So it may be a small pain depending on your knowledge.
Considering the above you may want to just reinstall. No need to use the existing Win 10 drive just put the drive in, hook it up and do an install selecting upgrade. This will keep all installed software but you do need to do an update when completed. Be sure the correct drive and partitions are selected in the partitioning scheme and modify if not what you want/expect.
Be sure to boot the install media in EFI mode and all should be OK. Read and understand all screens don’t just accept accept accept like you are in Windows
Ask here if you run into something you don’t understand rather then guessing.
I can’t put the W10 drive, Os drive and Home drive in the case. There are only bays for 2 drives. Dual boot to Windows is not important to me. I have a dual boot laptop.
Are here special hard drives for EFI? Can you boot into EFI like a legacy bios?
EFI is not legacy but either will work but don’t mix boot modes on multi-boot setups
EFI requires a small EFI boot partition which is FAT formatted mounted at /boot/efi… It also requires a new OS to be added to the UEFI flash rom boot tables. If a new install this is handled automatically if you boot the installer in EFI mode. But you should always confirm before accepting a partition scheme
Can I shrink the W10 partition, do a fresh EFI install of Leap (dual boot) and use my present /home HD and partition with out having to reformat the /home partition or drive? - 2 drives… the one that came with the computer and my present data drive?
If you have separate home you never have to format it but you do have to be sure that the installer understands what you want, it is not good at reading minds. But yes you can do that
Sorry to be so brain dead about this. This EFI stuff makes me very nervous. I’ve never messed with it before…
So, when I get to the Expert Partition screen, I just tell the partitioner to mount the old home to /home and not format… basically like I’ve always done?
Thanks for your patience.
Yep only thing new is the EFI boot partition needed by EFI to start an OS. No more MBR Also the 4 partition limits of the old DOS partition scheme are gone. No need for extended and logical partitions.
