I used Leap 42.1 without incident for many months. (AMD FX™-6300 Six-Core Processor, ATI HD 7850 video card). Recently the mouse pointer would slow down to the point nothing could be done, sometimes freezing completely. I need do nothing to fix it except wait, from 5 -20 seconds. I ran HTOP from the command line to see if it was a resource issue, but never saw CPU usage in excess of 45% or memory usage in excess of 24% with no swap. This is a six core, 64 bit, (AMD Bulldozer) CPU with 8 GB of memory, running one user application at a time, + whatever background tasks are typical of Opensuse Linux, no backups, no file transfers going on. Since I could not identify a specific cause I did the following:
New Keyboard and Mouse (USB) (Tried swapping USB ports).
Secure wipe of the Hard Drive (HDPARM - secure erase enhanced, including the HPA). Followed by fresh install of Leap 42.2 and all updates.
New video card - nVidia GTX 650 PCI Express x16 Gen2 - 2GB GDDR5 memory, (128bit transfers) 5.0 GT/s
Installed nVida proprietary drivers (using Yast 1 click). version 375.26, Linux
Tried new browser, Chromium.
After EACH step, I used my PC as I had done before, and experienced the same symptoms of mouse slowdown and freeze. This only happens maybe every 10-15 minutes.
The symptoms are not specific to any one application, it can happen with just the desktop showing.
No other symptoms, the programs otherwise run as expected. No abnormal program terminations. No unscheduled reboots.
I have my network switch in front of me, there are no unusual or rapid transfers over the network when the mouse freezes. Wired gigabit network, not Wi-Fi.
I have a reliable firewall appliance as the WAN internet gateway.
Big power supply, lots of cooling fans, no issue with overheating, has always worked well until this week.
I am out of ideas, any suggestions?
Thank You,
J.W.
