Today i installed openSUSE on my laptop, but after installation, my CDROM is no where to be found. there is nothing like /media/cdrom. Can anybody help. What surprise me most is that i used the same CDROM to install the OS. I am confused. HEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP.
- d unicorn,
can you play an audio CD?
Open a console, become root and issue
hwinfo --crdom
What is the output?
Or try
tail -f /var/log/messages
Now insert a data CD and watch the output on the console.
Anything?
Uwe
hwinfo --cdrom ----- no output?
tail -f /var/log/messages, … nothing …
what can i do again?
i am a frustrated human being without my cdrom. … HELP.

Strange. Do you see the drive in the BIOS?
Uwe
Is it an internal CD-ROM drive? For reference, my laptop gives:
lsscsi
[0:0:0:0] disk ATA TOSHIBA MK8032GS AS11 /dev/sda
[1:0:0:0] cd/dvd MAT****A DVD-RAM UJ-830Sx 1.00 -
let me give you details about what is hapening …
After installing the OS, i went to the terminal and typed hwinfo --short, this was the result ;

No more CDROM as part of the hardware list, whhhhhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy :’(
Curious… I’ve heard of similar problems with particular kernels where modules don’t get loaded, but I can’t think why you would have a problem after initial installation (except for hardware failure).
What is the output of these:
lsmod |grep sr_mod
ls -l /dev/scd0
I get (for ref):
ls -l /dev/scd0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2008-09-04 20:36 /dev/scd0 -> sr0
lsmod |grep sr_mod
sr_mod 33320 0
cdrom 50588 2 sr_mod,ide_cd_mod
scsi_mod 168436 6 sr_mod,st,usb_storage,sg,sd_mod,libata
unicorn@unicorncom:~> lsmod |grep sr_mod
sr_mod 33320 0
cdrom 50588 2 sr_mod,ide_cd_mod
scsi_mod 168308 5 st,sr_mod,sg,sd_mod,libata
unicorn@unicorncom:~> ls -l /dev/scd0
ls: cannot access /dev/scd0: No such file or directory

hwinfo told you the name is /dev/sr0, so why don’t you try that?
Uwe
Please, it’s like you are not getting the problem,
Immediately after installation, hwinfo detected the CDROM as /dev/sr0, but after restarting … no /dev/sr0, /dev/cdrom, /dev/dvd e.t.c. what’s the problem? help … >:(
This problem does not have one definitive answer or solution, and is difficult to diagnose via a forum. (Different story if the machine was in front of us).
Strange. Do you see the drive in the BIOS?
You never answered this question.
Your loaded kernel modules are the same as mine, yet the actual device (node) is missing. Wild guess here: Maybe your cd/dvd device is not properly supported by the kernel drivers, and requires a different module to support it.
I would try booting from a liveCD, and comparing the dmesg results. Post the output here.
Post the output of
cdrecord -scanbus
unicorn@linux-7zp3:~> cdrecord -scanbus
wodim: No such file or directory.
Cannot open SCSI driver!
For possible targets try ‘wodim --devices’ or ‘wodim -scanbus’.
For possible transport specifiers try ‘wodim dev=help’.
For IDE/ATAPI devices configuration, see the file README.ATAPI.setup from
the wodim documentation.
You need to prove the device is recognised in BIOS first, then via LiveCD or similar. I would also try googling your model cd/dvd device with ‘linux’ or ‘opensuse’ to see if there are other similar issues reported. Thats about all I can offer for now.
