mounted by kernel question

Hello everyone.

I did upgrade my SUSE installation from 10.1 to 11.1 in a Gateway laptop… jus,t before the installatin started I got the following warning:

Some partitions in the system on /dev/sda2/ are mounted by kernel-device name. This is not reliable for the update since kernel-device names are unfortunately non persistent. It is strongly recommended to start the old system and change the mount by method to any other method for all partitions.

I did upgrade the system anyway… and apparently everything loos and works fine… my questions are: what does “non persistent” mean? it sounds too ambiguous, why is not reliable any longer to do this? What if a change the mount by method in the new system? I will appreciate any comment. Take care,

Antonio.
