More than 4GB available on opensuse 11.2 32-bit?

Hi folks!

I upgraded today the main memory of my desktop machine. There were 2GB in it, today I installed another 4GB. So after installation I was prepared to install opensuse 11.3 64 bit to access all the mem. But surprise, surprise: after booting the old linux installation free says the followin:

total used free shared buffers cached

Mem: 6161856 2083124 4078732 0 131084 1492420
-/+ buffers/cache: 459620 5702236
Swap: 618492 0 618492

So it seems that all the memory is already available. I use the prebuild kernel
Linux desktop1 2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2010-03-16 21:25:39 +0100 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Does anybody know what there’s going on? Taking a simple calculator shows that you can address max 4GB with 32 bit? I’m confused…

The kernel-desktop has PAE support as far as I know, so what you see is correct.

There is also kernel-pae,

If you had kernel-default you would not see all your memory on a 32 bit build.

Hi,

thanks for the fast answer! I had looked better for the meaning of “pae” before asking…

Thanx again.

Google for PAE.

Good luck.
