Yes, my apologies to Stephan for the derailment.
FWIW, I think the icon’s fine as-is.

In respect to the author’s creative vision, I feel it’s OK to make suggestions and ask questions, but it’s not OK to be demanding. If it’s then made clear the subject is not open to discussion, accept that and move on, don’t be a pest.
Based on comments here and in the github issue, keeping away from any symbols is probably a good idea. It was wrong to suggest anything that might be open to interpretation as religious. Remembering the issues around government devil-computers related to the BSD daemon logo, finding some safe ground is never easy. I also remember a Borland product used a raised red-hand on errors, it looked exactly like the Red Hand of Ulster, which made me cringe every time I saw it.
The original is fine. Let it stay as it is.
I don’t like the icon and have changed it to one of the more boring ones. I also do not associate merlin with a wizard, but as someone who likes and watches birds with a bird - Falco columbarius, in Germany it is called Merlin.
In summary, the majority of users who commented (which may be a bit biased) is clearly in favor of keeping the existing icon with a few votes for something different.
I wouldn’t mind an icon designer “cleaning up” the small versions of the icon (48x48, 32x32 or smaller) to make details that get lost in downscaling a bit less fuzzy; without changing the style of the icon completely, so it can still be recognized as something very much like our original Myrlyn icon.
Having said that, thanks everybody for this constructive discussion!
