More problems following 13.1 update

Hi all.
Running previously on 12.2 and up to date.
previous version linux 3.4.6.3 KDE 4.8.5 and nvidea graphics drivers.
2 disk system multiboot to win 7 or linux 50G / dir and 400G /home dir.
2 displays screen 11680 x 1050 screen 2 1920 x 1080.
The update was easy and slick and complained of packages error ibus v libreoffice and took option to deinstall libreoffice package.
removed existing repositories, no probs.
update continued and no problems.

After reboot gives a better grub screen and retained my multiboot functions.
Default linux begins, displays flash screen then stops and no login boxes, before halt can toggle escape and view progress all looks ok then stops and other keys eg f2 do nothing.
advanced boot options allow load of recovery system and old kernel, these allow login options to display.

Second problem is no networking, tried reconfiguring and playing under recovery system. but no network.still working on win 7 and was working before upgrade.
lots of info within logs shows
rt61 pci de authenticating from addr by local choice (reason = 3)
disabling HT/VHT due to WEP/TKIP use
lots of lines in log but dificult to post as I have to change to win to connect to network.
There appear to be more errors on sound and stuff.

So 2 real probs
1 no login and halt on updated kernel
2 no networking

With networking enabled I will at least be able to get nvidea drivers which will help a lot.
All help appreciated thanks

See release notes.

You probably have two network interfaces, one with old name, not
working, one with new name, not configured. You have to remove old and
configure new.

Hi
Thanks for the reply.
release notes do not mention two interface prob.
release notes say if no network after install to reboot, old ones are the best eh?, many reboots later still same.
other point in release notes is to do with network manager, minne was done with ifup and tried reconfiguring with known working settings and still same
checking message log shows lots ofattempts to run network which appear to then shut it down, sorry it is difficult to display messages as I have to reboot to other system.
cheers

Thee has been a change in the naming convention for network things I guess it is possible that your old cofigs may be still in effect. The change is in the notes.

Point 4.3 of release notes.

Hi all,
86x64 iso downloaded monday, burned yesterday, installed today, release notes 4.1 there 4.2 there no 4.3??
will check on wiki to see more recent ver. I did check them
cheers

Hi
No Further.
looking at another thread I can see the problem being talked of re different I/F’s
this is not within my release notes but no matter.
the fix for it is still not clear,
from ifconfig I could see Lo and wlan0 as they were this AM
from hardware devices I could see a network interfaces section with my card and refs to wlan0, also further down was a wireless interfaces section with a different name.
How do I resolve this?
so far have deleted existing yast network wlan0 config, how do I find and configure the newly named device?
all help appreciated and will continue AM tomorrow.
Thanks

Unfortunately, you can only read the release notes after you install
and update the system, due to Bug 851864 and Bug 852174 (a shame).

I’ll copy that paragraph for you here, if you don’t have a 13.1 install
to read them:

openSUSE 13.1 Release Notes (p8 of 11)

4.3. Duplicated Network Interfaces

The current version of systemd uses a new convention for assigning
predictable names to network interfaces. YaST is changed accordingly.

Some reports indicate a bug in YaST when conversion from one naming
scheme to another takes place. If the same network interface has two
different names, you have been hit by this bug. In this case remove the
different network interfaces in /etc/sysconfig/network and use YaST to
configure the network anew.

For more information about predictable network interface names, see
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/PredictableNetworkInterfaceNames/.

Please post the output of ifconfig, inside a code tags block (the ‘#’
button).

I did see two network cards(in yast ==> nw settings) assigned to enp2s0
and eth0when i booted into 13.1 for first time
I deleted one of them( eth0),saved and restarted machine and then
everything was good with ifup(legacy) as indicated by YaST

GNOME 3.10.1
openSUSE 13.1 (Bottle) (x86_64) 64-bit
Kernel Linux 3.11.6-4-desktop

Yes, that’s the situation I meant.

Only I did not reboot. Instead I configured the that interface with the
weird new name, and restarted the service.

Hi all,
Thanks for the replies.
I have solved both of my problems by re installing. I did try looking under /etc/sysconfig/networks for different networks and could not see them. I had removed all cards from yast network setup and various other things to no avail. With a re install and import disk settings it all worked straightforward configured the network card exactly same as before though it did indeed have a new name as wlp5s1 rather than wlan0, it then worked on the test. The system now boots much quicker and allows me to login with network working ok.
Since I was already configured for a separate home directory I have lost no data though now I have to re set stuff up does not yet appear to be nvidia drivers for 13.1 and really need my VLC.
Again thanks for the help, much appreciated, sorry I need the use of my machine too much to try and solve the probs.
Cheers
