Monitor screen resolution

Hello everyone,

I just now switched from windows to linux. i have installed opensuse kde 11.1 64 bits os.

it seems that the display configuration is not proper. my hardware config is:

Intel core 2 duo e7400
intel dg41ty motherboard
corsair 2gb ram
viewsonic va1928wm 1400X900

currently my display resolution is set to 1280X1024(auto) with 77hz. (no other option available to set.)the required and safe is 1400X900 with 60hz.

i’m not so good at console nor the commands.

please help. thank you in advance.

regards
nmb

And your graphics device/card is??

And your graphics device/card is?? :

i didn’t explicitly add any hardware for graphics.

the link to my mother board details : http://www.intel.com/Products/Desktop/Motherboards/DG41TY/DG41TY-overview.htm

also, i use dvi cable between my monitor and cpu.

thanks for the fast reply.

Go to yast
hardware - graphics and monitor

can you do a printscreen of it and post on imagebam? Or relate what you see.

From a terminal do:

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

post result
and

/sbin/lspci -nnk

surely.

here is the link : http://www.imagebam.com/image/51708549763171

if i type the first code in the console, i get the error as “No such file or directory”

and for the second command:

instead of console, i manually browsed to x11 folder and opened xorg.conf and here is the content:

VESA is very basic. I suspect it might be the best you’ll get. The output also shows no kernel module loaded for your GPU device which suggests to me it could be an issue. I would have expected it to be there from install if it was available.

I have Intel chip, not so flashy as yours, here is my section as above:

Try doing some google searches

oki. thank you.

i had previously installed gnome version that time there was no resolution problem. the only change is that then i had connected the ordinary vga cable between monitor and cpu, and now dvi cable.

also, now i’m not able to connect to internet on suse.

So maybe you know your next move?

oki. i’ll try the vga cable. but what about my internet thing?. i need to reinstall suse?.. no problem i can do it.

but i have dual boot with win xp. xp previously installed. please help.

thank you
nmb

This is your eth device

03:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller [10ec:8168] (rev 03)
        Kernel driver in use: r8169

Should work.
Go to Yast - Network Devices - Network Settings
Your device should already be listed (does it say ‘Not Configured’?)
If so, select and ‘edit’ probably all you need do is click next until it’s done, then accept.
If it throws an error, just ignore it.

the device is not listed there. i have searched everywhere i see the name “network”. but couldn’t. is there way to reinstall everything and start afresh?. ,please… but my windows xp should be on the hdd and bootable. i want suse. please.

thank you.

i’ll again post the previous two outputs of the commands you gave. please wait. i need to keep rebooting to suse and windows xp.

sorry… now i checked…

yes the device is listed there. but it is greyed out, in the sense i can’t select or edit as you said. as i soon as i open network settings, i get a message that network settings is monitored by network manager and cannot be edited by yast and so if i try to open network manager, it wont come up… please help. i have time to reinstall opensuse. but the thing is i have installed xp as i said. and i need to retain it. please help.

regards
nmb

edit : also, i have changed the cable to vga… but nothing changed… isn’t there anything to rescan the hardware devices and setup.??

The network can be managed either with Network Manager or via ifup.
Have you tried switching to ifup? Then try and configure. A reboot may be needed.

i removed open suse, i installed it again. i’m not able to login to windows xp :frowning: . i updated the os. the update manager says everything is update. in windows xp, the max available grahics memory was 1024MB.

please help me with the screen resolution… please. its really looking bad. according this link : Desktop Boards - Linux* support resources my hardware supports novell linux. see also this : DG41TY System . help please.

thank you,
nmb.

bump…

I’m not sure which problem you want to address first. How you removed SUSE before re-installing may have a bearing on what you have ended up with now.

There is some info on your LAN device but very little on the
Intel®GMA X4500 (G41)

Do this in a terminal and post result:

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

first i booted to xp > disk management > deleted the partitions linux had created, rebooted and tried to fix with fixmbr, fixboot etc etc… but all in vain.

here is the o/p of console:
