After a space of several years away, I would like to try Opensuse with a view to changing to it. So I have downloaded the 11.4 KDE liveCD.
However, I can’t get the liveCD to recognise my monitor, the resolution of which is 1600x900. Every one I have tried on the boot screen, including vesa, just gives vertical strips.

unfortunately, some ‘artistic’ developer decided that 11.4 should have a
shattered green vertical strip background like you see here: http://tinyurl.com/455hbml
if that is what you see, you are seeing the way it is supposed to
be…just keep going…
if that is not what you see, post again and tell us about your hardware
especially video…

I wonder if somebody opened a bugzilla on that! >:-)

(from 11.4 x86_64 “Celadon” at Telcontar)
The computer is an HP p6206uk and it has an onboard GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 graphics chip.
The 20" widescreen HP monitor has a resolution of 1600x900 @ 60Hz.
On booting the KDE liveCD, it gets to the end of the boot and I end up with the whole screen filled with vertical bands 17mm wide. They are alternate light green and dark green. Each band has many narrow horizontal which make them look rather like ladders with rungs! On booting, I can see things happening behind the bands, but they are just too broken up to be able to decipher what is happening.
When it has finished, it just stays in that condition. I have left it for about 10 minutes in case anything changes, but nothing does.
What is confusing, is that it is only OpenSuse which has this problem for me. I have tried several other distros without a video problem. They all find the correct resolution.
If anyone requires any further information, please let me know.

yes, the “black screen” comes sometimes in a large variety of colors and
appearances…
i guess the “1st thing to try” will probably work for you…give it a
shot, if it does then you can make that happen automatically every time,
or maybe you will be better seeking the best video driver for that card,
continue to here: http://tinyurl.com/37v9y7m
and oh, if the ‘first thing’ doesn’t work there are a long series of
things to try… read the caveat in my sig.
My monitor background during the booting of the liveCD, is exactly the same as the background in the photograph.
@ DenverD.
Thanks for the ‘tinyurl’ links. I’ll try them and see what happens. Then I’ll get back to the forum to either say that it is solved, or that I would like further help.
Thank you very much for the links you supplied. They are very interesting and are useful to have. I will probably experiment by trying other suggestions given in them.
Thank you, also, bsilvereagle for confirming DenverD’s recommendation.

Interesting, this is the first time i have ever heard of a monitor with
that particular resolution.
